Last night WEC 47 took place in Columbus Ohio. There were a lot of surprises
and close calls throughout the evening. Below is a rundown of the card and
my opinion of each fight.
Bart Palaszweski VS Karen Darabedyan
Outcome: Palaszweski via submission (Armbar).
Notes: I really liked how Karen was attacking Bart earlier with a fury of
punches. When Karen had the double leg takedown I thought he had it won.
However Bart has a proven ground game and he showed it with a very
Deividas Taurosevicius VS LC Davis
Outcome: Taurosevicius via majority decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-29)
Notes: This fight was very difficult for the judges to analyze.
Taurosevicius did work the first two rounds with better cage control than LC
Davis but I don't agree with the 2nd round to Taurosevicius. I thought
David worked a really great ground and even though Taurosevicius gathered a
takedown I would have still given it to Davis.
Jens Pulver VS Javier Vazquez
Outcome: Vazquez via submission (Armbar).
Notes: Vazquez and Pulver matched up great on paper but when the fight went
to the ground it was all Vazquez. Pulver however is a MMA legend and really
has gained respect from a lot of MMA fighters and won't be looked at as a
failure. I don't think Jens is done in the WEC but I hope we find out soon.
Miguel Torres VS Joseph Benavidez
Outcome: Benavidez via submission (guillotine choke)
Notes: Benavidez really controlled the 1st round not only taking Torres to
the ground but landing really strong punches. For his short height the
thought Benavidez would be not as strong as Torres but he showed that he is
stronger than he looks. Benavidez landed a really strong blow to the head of
Torres. Even with the loss I see Torres bouncing back in his next fight.
Brian Bowles vs Dominick Cruz
Outcome: Cruz via TKO (injury)
Notes: The 1st round was a great exchange of punches between Cruz and
Bowles. Both really looked like they wanted to stay on their feet. However
with the broken hand of Bowles the match ended with excitement. Cruz did
have excellent counters on Bowles and I think he would have won the fight
without a submission or TKO by Bowles in the 3rd round.
