"I'm Glad You Came"

In the Name of the Compassionate and Infinitely Merciful Precious Beloved

My wife and daughters really like the song by the band "The Wanted" called "Glad You Came." When I hear the song, it makes me think of all the wonderful people that I have been blessed with in my life:

The sun goes down
The stars come out
And all that counts
Is here and now
My universe will never be the same
I'm glad you came

You cast a spell on me, spell on me
You hit me like the sky fell on me, fell on me
And I decided you look well on me, well on me

When these people came to me, indeed, "my universe" was never "the same," and I am so very glad they came. First and foremost is my wife: she came to me at a particularly dark moment in my life, and ever since, it has been forever lighted. I can say truly that, without her, I would not have been who I am and where I am today. I have been perpetually blessed by the presence of my wife, and I am glad she came.

And because of my wife, I have been blessed to have my children. I love them all, and I am so grateful that they came into my life. This is especially true of my eldest daughter, whom we lost to cancer almost three years ago. I am so very glad she came. She brought me so much joy, so much happiness, and even though she had significant disability, she filled my heart with a love I have never known could exist before. Every day, my heart aches in the pain of knowing that we can't be together, that she can't grace our lives with her light, her love, her smile, and her grace. But, even though her time was so very short with us, I am so very, very glad she came.

The list can go on and on: those people that have graced my life with love, or familial ties, or friendship, or humor, or collegiality, or generosity. They are too numerous to count, and they have each, in their own way, "hit me like the sky fell on me," making me very glad that they all came. Yet, whenever I reflect over all those people that have made me glad they came, I cannot help but think about the One Who has sent them all to me: my Precious Beloved Lord Supreme.

I am so very glad He came into my life. Actually, He has always been there for me, from the very beginning. And He never really "left" for Him to come to me. Yet still, whenever I would ask for Him, He came so very fast and with a comfort that is unlike any other. When I asked for His grace in sending me a spouse, He sent me my wife. When I cried out to Him in the worst pain I have ever felt after my daughter died, He came to me with His love, and His comfort, and His mercy, and His grace. Whenever I need Him, He is right there for me. I am so very glad that He blessed me with the foresight and insight to know to seek His Face and Glory at all times in my life. And when I do, He comes to me running.

It reminds me of a "Sacred Tradition" of the Prophet Muhammad. In it, the Prophet reported that the Lord said:

If anyone approaches Me by a hand-span, I come to him an arm-span. If anyone approaches Me by an arm-span, I come to him two arm spans. If anyone approaches Me walking, I come to him running. If anyone meets Me with mistakes equivalent in weight to the whole earth, having not associated anything with Me, I will meet him with the same amount of forgiveness.

I am so very glad to have an awesome God like this. It is like the Quran says:

Thus, be constant in prayer, and render the purifying dues, and hold fast unto God. He is your Lord Supreme: and how excellent is this Lord Supreme, and how excellent this Giver of Help! (22:78)

Amen to that.
