Pecha Kucha Chicago "builds" on social media with iPad app for architecture

Pecha Kucha "Volume 15" brought out many people to Martyrs' who were inspired by the creativity of 11 interesting presenters on Tuesday night, September 7th.

Each speaker spent 20 seconds per slide talking on topics ranging from technology, art, architecture and comedy.

Pecha Kucha Vol. 15 speakers included: "architectural provocateur Ed Keegan, the comedic Daniel Shore, T.J. Thomas of Studio Murmur, landscape architect Peter Schaudt, young architect Carl Sergio, actor, historian, and Chautauquan Annette Baldwin, fisherman Phil Santoro, artist and School of the Art Institute professor Claire Ashley, graphic novelist Sean O'Neill, and Rick Valicenti of Thirst/Chicago fame. Zak Baker will also re-appear".  Emcees for the event were Architect Peter Exley and visual conceptualizer Thorsten Bösch.

All of the speakers were excellent of course, and left everyone feeling inspired even as they left Martyrs'. One speaker, Ed Keegan, had a more technological spin on his presentation.

When you think of Chicago, what is one of the big things that stand out and come to mind? The architecture of course, and since there's an app for everything else these days, why not an app for Chicago Architecture? It makes sense, so that's exactly what Edward Keegan has done.

Ed Keegan shared his experience with the crowd. He is an award-winning architecture observer in Chicago for a quarter century who's contributed to Chicago Architect and Architectural Record. He offered excellent commentary on the slides he presented, showing off many iconic views of architecture throughout the city.

In one of his slides, seen in the first photo in the slideshow below, Ed Keegan revealed that he now offers his commentary in the digital realm with the release of his app for iPhone and iPad.

"Chicago Architecture: A Critical Guide by Edward Keegan", made in partnership with Sutro Media, offers directions, maps, and commentary by Keegan himself about the different buildings and architecture around the city.

The app costs $2.99 which seems like a good price for a in-depth guide to Chicago's architecture from an award-winning local contributer. The app can be bought here on iTunes.

Below are some pictures from the evening at Pecha Kucha Vol. 15. Enjoy, and for all you creatives who can't get enough, feel free to come to the next Pecha Kucha Vol 16. on December 7, again at Martyrs' but with a slight change in the temperature next time around. Visit www.pecha-kucha.org/night/chicago for all the details.

  • thanks for the write up!

the headline is a little confusing - PKN Chicago has nothing to do with the app! (except being excited about it)

And thanks for the umlaut ;) That was really nice to see!

  • oh - and the next PK Chicago is on Dec 7 not 17 !

  • Thanks for pointing that out Thorsten, it's been changed now!

As for the headline yes there was some challenge in creating it. I wanted to combine both a small Pecha Kucha night overview and the architecture app into one story, since this blog is about technology mainly. So since nothing came to mind that encompassed both ideas perfectly in a headline, just attempted to make it as witty as possible. "Builds on" was meant more of a way to say PK assisted Ed in showing off his app, not really developing for him.

Thanks for reading and for the comments!

By the way, I should mention that you do a very good job with Pecha Kucha. Look forward to attending the next one as usual, and perhaps get a chance to meet you next time as well!
