Courageous 18-year-old, Derrick Martin told Bleckley County school officials that he wanted to take his boyfriend to the prom. Worrying that the dance would be canceled like that of 18-year-old Constance McMillen in Itawamba County, Mississippi; the teenager was surprised to find out the his high school would allow it.
"I didn't expect them to say yes," he told Julie Hubbard of Macon.com. "It's who I am. I have the same rights."
In a day and age where people are still hindered and harmed for their sexual orientation, Derrick has made a very brave stand! With a population of 12,353 Bleckley County truly represents small town America; showing that there is some improvement in the nations nomenclature regarding LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) people.
This also shows that today's youth are ready to take a stand. Although world changing groups like the California based NOH8 Campaign are making large end roads, the gay teen suicide rate still remains high. This bold step by Derrick and his boyfriend proves them to be life changers in a world that desperately needs them!
