JR Martinez stopped by the set of Windy City Live on Friday for an interview promoting his new fire rescue drama "SAF3." Martinez is a veteran of the Iraq War best known for winning Season 13 of "Dancing with the Stars," after his breakout role in the hit show, "All My Children."
While serving in the infantry in 2003, J.R. Martinez was badly injured when a bomb blew up the Humvee he was patrolling in. When he awoke from his medically induced coma he found himself in an American military hospital in Germany. It was there he learned that almost 40% of his body was severely charred.
One of the major plot lines of SAF3 closely mirrors Martinez's personal journey. In last week's premiere episode, Martinez's firefighter character, Alfonso Rivera, is badly burned while saving a young girl scout from a wildfire on Catalina Island.
Episodes three (10/5) and four (10/12) will trace Martinez's struggles to cope with his injuries as he seeks to rejoin the elite SAF3 unit. Click here for a trailer of the show.
Be sure to set your DVRs for "SAF3" which airs locally Saturdays at 1pm on WGN.
