2013 Emmy Predictions: Comedy

2013 Emmy Predictions: Comedy

It’s getting down to the wire and your Emmy ballots are no doubt due very soon so it’s time to get to the meat of the awards show. Well, the light meat anyway because in the words of Steven Sondheim, tragedy tomorrow, comedy tonight!

In case you need a refresher here are my picks for reality and TV movie and miniseries and in case it hasn’t already been made abundantly clear, when I say will win I am basing it off of the current odds and buzz from people far more in the know than myself and when I say should win I mean in my own biased and deeply personal opinion.

Now let’s get on with it!

30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
Modern Family (2012 WINNER)

Who Should Win:  Anything besides Modern Family

Who Will Win: Modern Family

It’s getting a little boring watching Modern Family accept its Emmy year after year. Look, I’m a fan of the show and a firm supporter of its earlier wins, but its quickly faded from up and coming show getting unheard of recognition to the old guard winning no matter its quality. I’m not saying Modern Family was awful this season, but it wasn’t up to the same level that won it Emmys in the past. And if that is the bar from which to measure a deserving win, it wasn’t met and it’s time for something else to get its dues.

Laura Dern, Enlightened
Lena Dunham, Girls
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep (2012 WINNER)
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Who Should Win:  Amy Poehler

Who Will Win:  Julia Louis-Dreyfus

I’m not the first person on the internet to point out Amy Poehler really deserves an Emmy and I’m not likely to be the last. For whatever reason Emmy voters like to ignore Poehler and ignore Parks and Rec even harder. They do, however, have major love for Julia Louis-Dreyfus and would probably give her an Emmy just for showing up. Not that Julia isn’t hysterically wonderful on Veep, but it would be nice if some of that love got spread around. Dark Horse Prediction: this being the last season of nomination for 30 Rock, Tina Fey could pull off a win. The Emmy’s were early supporters of the show and could feel enough nostalgia to give to her. If they’re not too busy watching Seinfeld reruns to even notice, of course.

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Jason Bateman, Arrested Development
Louis CK, Louie
Don Cheadle, House of Lies
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Who Should Win: Louis C.K.

Who Will Win:  Louis C.K.

I’ll give it to Louis if only for the sake of shaking things up a little. Comedies have taken much longer to adapt to new ways of storytelling like their dramatic cousins and Louie is one of the groundbreaking shows to go there. But, in the same way I don’t think Lena Dunahm should win any acting awards for Girls (which is another example of an innovative, fresh comedy) I don’t really agree that Louis should win here. It’s the writing that makes these shows such a breath of fresh air rather than the acting. But Louis winning would still be a step in the right direction. Who knows, they could also fall back on old habits and give another Emmy to Alec Baldwin. I wouldn’t  put it past them.

Mayim Bialik, The Big Bang Theory
Jane Lynch, Glee
Julie Bowen, Modern Family (2012 WINNER)
Merritt Wever, Nurse Jackie
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Anna Chlumsky, Veep

Who Should Win: Mayim Bialik

Who Will Win: Julie Bowen

So many funny ladies to choose from! By choosing to be nominated as supporting, the cast of Modern Family really trips things up for the rest of the nominees. Sure the lead acting nominees love it, but the supporting ones not so much. The Emmy’s love affair with Modern Family shows no signs of slowing down and while I argued last year that Sofia Vegara deserved an Emmy as much as Julie Bowen, this year I say to hell with both of them (not really though. Love you girls and best of luck!). Mayim Bialik revitalized a stuttering show and breathed a few more years of life into a tiring dynamic. If that doesn’t deserve an Emmy I don’t know what does.

Adam Driver, Girls
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O’Neill, Modern Family
Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Bill Hader, Saturday Night Live
Tony Hale, Veep

Who Should Win:  Bill Hader

Who Will Win: Ty Burrell

Why should Bill Hader win? Why not? It makes no sense that he’s even nominated here given that SNL is categorized as a variety show and not a comedy, but whatever. If they can nominate him then I can pick him and hope that he accepts the award as Stefan or that weird puppet guy or even that Hollywood thing he trotted out for James Franco’s roast.  Wouldn’t that be fun? But hey, don’t go picking him in your office pool off my suggestion. I’m telling you right now I’m not even going to pick him. Ty Burrell is like the new Julia Louis-Dreyfus in the Emmy’s eyes. Their love affair is relatively new, but it’s still white hot. You can’t fight that.

30 Rock, “Last Lunch”
30 Rock, “Hogcock!”
Louie, “Daddy’s Girlfriend”
The Office, “Finale”
Episodes, “Episode 209”

Who Should Win:  Louie

Who Will Win:  30 Rock, “Last Lunch”

Remember when I was totally dissing Louis C.K. for his acting and telling him to stick to writing a few paragraphs back? No? Well that’s because I didn’t, but I did somewhat imply that he would be winning for writing. Well, not this year, Lou. There’s nothing like a good finale episode and there are two to choose from in this bunch. Given that The Office finale was kind of a letdown, this one is unequivocally going to 30 Rock. Or maybe Louie. You can never tell with these Emmy voters.

Funny enough for you? Well too bad. Check back next week for the TV blogger’s equivalent of Sophie’s Choice if Sophie had six kids and no real stakes in her decision aka DRAMA CATEGORIES!!!!
