One in five young people has a serious mental health problem at any given time, according to the U.S. National Health Information Center. Parenting a child with mental health concerns brings tremendous challenges and can be extraordinarily difficult and scary. To find hope and humor while providing resources and support would be my fervent wish of this forum.
I've spent the last 17 years of life with my son tucking away moments that have brought me to my knees in anguish, sent me running to the liquor cabinet (or walk in closet--whatever), or braying with pride about a misshapen clay figure that was actually presented to me without insult or injury.
I believe my first hand experience will offer a unique glimpse into the ever growing population of children, teens, and young adults with mental illness, the society that doesn't understand them, and the parents who love them but hate their illness. I have a warm and witty style but am also a social worker with more than a passing knowledge of resources available and a professional ability to share pretty crappy news directly but with empathy and panache.
