In recent news, reality star and social media mogul Kim Kardashian has tested positive for the lupus antibody during one of her lab tests. Kardashian was complaining of stiff joints and swollen hands, not to mention fatigue, all of the tell-tale signs of the onset of lupus. However, she was also diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis, a tricky component under the lupus umbrella.
Lupus is an autoimmune disorder where the healthy immune system attacks itself, causing damage or potential damage to internal and external organ systems. There are several types of lupus with systemic (SLE) being the worse to discoid (the skin is affected by scars or rashes), juvenile and drug-induced. Lupus is called "The Great Mimicker" because it mimics other disorders.
For example, Kardashian may have experienced swollen joints where she may have arthritis but she is also having all the symptoms of someone with lupus. She may not have lupus at all in spite of her negative mindset. The only thing she can do now is get some rest and hope for the best. Lupus for some reason affects women of childbearing age. Lupus may be life-threatening but is not deadly if you take care of yourself properly.
I hope she does not have lupus. I've had it since 1999 but wasn't officially diagnosed until 2004. Technology has come a long way which works well in Kardashian's favor; it took years for my diagnosis because I was ill with so many things. I underwent blood and plasma transfusions, skin rashes, hair loss and my most recent malady, myopathy which is total loss of my muscle function. I endured one month's hospital stay and two months of physical therapy to get back on track.
If Kardashian is diagnosed with lupus, I truly hope she uses her influence on bringing this disease to the forefront. People may think she is shallow but she does a lot of philanthropic work no one knows about, not forgetting about lobbying the freedom of the black female inmate not long ago. She had the power to take it to President Trump and got it done.
There are other celebs with lupus such as Toni Braxton, Selena Gomez, singer/songwriter Seal and Nick Cannon. The only time you hear from them is when they have a flare up landing them in the hospital. Gomez has done some lobbying as her best friend donated her kidney to her for her transplant. Braxton had a Lifetime movie about her life where people learned about her lupus and has made some appearances on talk shows, but that's it. As far as I know, Cannon and Seal are pretty silent until they have a medical scare.
I wish Kardashian all the best. Lupus is a disease that will turn your life upside down because your social life will definitely change, not to mention the physical activities you once loved. Kardashian will be fine because she has a lot of support which she is definitely going to need. She will also find out who her true friends are and family solidarity. I would love to tune in to this episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians sitting in my "Amen!" corner.
