For the record, I haven't had Ben & Jerry's ice cream since the 90s. Seriously. My favorite at that time was Rainforest Crunch and Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. Fast forward to two weeks ago, I bypassed a freezer at my neighborhood CVS Pharmacy to do a little shopping to kill time while waiting for my prescriptions. What did I do that for? Normally I don't buy food at drugstores because the prices are outrageous but the price tag on the Ben & Jerry's labels got my attention.
What got my attention next were all of the different creations that happened since the 90s. I noticed that Chunky Monkey still existed but I never tried that one because I don't like bananas. What sucker punched me next is what made me an addict--Ben & Jerry's great marketing tool for naming a couple of their creations after talk show hosts.
Of course, that lured me to be nosy to read the labels further. First up was 'The Tonight Dough" starring Jimmy Fallon. The label reads "Caramel & Chocolate Ice Creams With Chocolate Cookie Swirls & Gobs of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough & Peanut Butter Cookie Dough." How could I resist trying that? For $3.99 a pint when they are normally over $6 bucks, why not? Next up, is Stephen Colbert's "AmeriCone Dream". This lovely but simple concoction reads "Vanilla Ice Cream With Fudge-Covered Waffle Cone Pieces And a Caramel Swirl".
After that, I've tried their "Phish Food" which has "Chocolate Ice Cream With Gooey Marshmallow And Caramel Swirls, And A School Of Fudge Fish". Last, but not least, are their "Half Baked" ice cream which includes "Chocolate Fudge Brownie And Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Swirled Together That Takes Ice Cream Euphoria To A Whole New Level" and "Salted Caramel Core" which boasts of "Sweet Cream Ice Cream With Blonde Brownies & A Salted Caramel Core". This flavor affected me in a different way because the ice cream is delicious but the caramel was a bit too salty for my taste. I guess you can bypass that (which I did) and still enjoyed it.
Don't get me wrong Ben & Jerry--you guys has done and is still doing an amazing job with your creations and the quality of the product is unlike any ice cream I've had over the years. Your prices are totally worth it but I have to call it quits for now (it pains me to say that). I'm calling it quits because your flavors are making it hard for me to exercise temperance and appetite control, something that is very important to me because I'm a lupus sufferer.
When you have lupus, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks itself, causing damage or potential damage to internal and external organ systems, you're on a lot of medications that may cause weight gain as it is. Indulging in your ice cream the way I have for the past two weeks should have been a big no-no but again, no fault of yours; you created your product to do what it does.
I will say this though--parting is such sweet sorrow.
