The Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Awards (GBOMA) will be held September 27, 2017. Submissions are still open but you have until Sunday, September 10, 2017, 11:59 p.m.
This will be the 24th annual event where Illinois residents will submit their 3-minute poem to hopefully recite. The payoff is $500 for the winner but the best part overall is being a part of the excitement.
Gwendolyn Brooks (1917-2000) was a Pulitzer Prize winner poet who was born in Kansas but lived the rest of her life in Chicago. Brooks founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Open Mic Award twenty-two years ago.
This year, the event will be held at the The American Writers Museum, Chicago. The competition is open to Illinois residents aged 18 years and older.
So--now you know what to do with all of those poems you've been sitting on, right? Or, go ahead and create one--3 minutes is not bad. I'm sure you've written a Dear John letter that was longer than that.
