Selena Gomez's kidney transplant was due to lupus

Singer Selena Gomez's recent kidney transplant was due to lupus. Thankfully, she was able to find a donor who happened to be her best friend, Francia Raisa.

People with lupus often have kidney disease known as lupus nephritis. Some such as entertainer Nick Cannon specifically has kidney disease due to lupus, and has been hospitalized several times for a flare up.

There are other entertainers such as Toni Braxton who suffers from lupus and Jasmine Guy, reportedly. There are different forms of lupus:

  • Systemic lupus (affects internal and external organ systems)
  • Discoid lupus (affects the skin, leaving permanent scarring or rashes)
  • Juvenile lupus (affects children and teenagers)
  • Lupus from prescription drugs (certain medications may cause lupus)

Lupus is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks itself, instead of fighting off infection that would cause the inflammation responsible for illnesses.

Lupus affects a major percentage of people of minorities, mainly women of childbearing age. Lupus is one of those diseases that you don't know you have because you think you are suffering from something else.

If you ask a person who has lupus when they were diagnosed, chances are they will tell you that it took a while to figure out. That happened to me--I started feeling ill in 1999 but wasn't diagnosed until 2004.

Thankfully, with ongoing research and technology, detecting lupus has gotten simpler. I'm glad that Selena was able to find a match for her transplant.

The biggest challenge for her now is to get some rest, which is hard to do when you're young and in show business.
