I'll never forget August 31, 1997: I was walking to the store and as I was crossing the street, what I saw stunned me like never before. I hadn't completely crossed the street but read these words from a distance on the front page of a newspaper at a newsstand: Princess Diana, Dies From Car Crash In Paris.
I remember it being very quiet that morning. I could have been hit by a car if I stood in that spot any longer. My heart sank. I became weak all of a sudden. Why was I feeling these emotions for a woman I didn't know?
I'll tell you why. Diana was one of us. A commoner if you will. People these days would say that she was someone who made it out of the 'hood so to speak. Diana was very down to earth and she snapped up one of the most eligible bachelors of that time, a prince, an heir to the throne, British royalty.
I was thirteen years old when Diana and Prince Charles got married in 1981. I remember getting up at 3 or 4a.m. our time to watch their wedding live. We had a black and white TV but it didn't matter. I was just fascinated by it all. I guess I was fascinated by the fairy tale likeness, not to mention that Diana was not that much older than me.
Unfortunately, however, culture clashes and other things destroyed their marriage. There were stories of mental abuse, infidelity, depression on Diana's behalf that she allegedly threw herself down the stairs, was enough to call it quits.
The best thing everyone can agree with that came out of this union was Prince William and Prince Harry. Thanks to Diana, she molded them as much as she could into well-rounded boys. She showed them what it meant to be charitable and compassionate, and thank God, not racist.
Of course, no one will forget that nasty stunt of a Halloween costume that Prince Harry wore of a Nazi general. That was totally inexcusable and makes no sense trying to figure out why he did it. I'm sure Diana would have been sick about it, better yet, he wouldn't have done it in the first place.
The good thing is that since then Prince Harry has been on the up and up. Prince William is doing his thing looking spitting image of Diana. What tickles me though is that Diana had that "side eye" look going on that everyone now talks about.
Question: Can you imagine Princess Diana sporting her "side eye" and having the last laugh, if Prince Harry brings color (Meghan Markle) to the palace?
