Would you live or work in downtown Chicago?
City Lights

I have lived in the Chicago Area since I was fourteen years old, but always in the suburbs. I love to visit the city, but I cannot imagine living or working there. I wanted to understand why people do, so I decided to interview someone that actually lives and works in the city. I hope you enjoy reading about Chicago as much as I did.

Briefly describe the apartments and location you lived in so far: I have lived in a few apartments in the 5 years that I’ve been in Chicago. The first was located in Lincoln Park on DePaul University’s campus where I was attending at the time. It was a cute 3 bedroom apartment that I shared with my sister and one other roommate. After graduation, I moved to another apartment in Lincoln Park near Clark Street. This was a very convenient location with an easy commute to work but too expensive for a small studio apartment. Next, I moved to a 1 bedroom apartment in the heart of Lincoln Square. This neighborhood is further north with a longer commute downtown, but it was a great area with lots of fun restaurants and bars! I currently live in an apartment near Logan Square with my boyfriend.  It is more spacious than my previous apartments for an affordable price. We are also a short distance to other popular neighborhoods like Wicker Park where we spend a lot of our free time!

screen-shot-2018-06-09-at-11-01-06-amWhat are benefits of living downtown? Living in Chicago has many benefits. You get the opportunity to easily explore new and diverse neighborhoods that have a lot of interesting things to offer. It’s fun to try new hotspots on the weekends and Chicago is known as a city full of amazing restaurants and bars! I also love spending time outside at farmers markets or festivals during the summer. One of my all-time favorite things about living downtown is the easy access to the lakefront and beach. It is difficult to be bored in Chicago, especially during the warmer months!

What are the challenges? The biggest challenge of being in Chicago is the cost of living. Everything from going out to rent can be expensive. You will find this in any big city so I feel it is worth it for all the benefits you get.

You also work downtown. Where is the general location? I work for a marketing company in the Loop-- our building is located near Millennium Park.

Do you like working downtown? The Loop a can be a little hectic but my office has a great location with lots of options for lunch or grabbing drinks after work. I also enjoy going outside on breaks to Millennium Park or the Riverwalk.

What do you see for the future? Downtown or suburbs? I love living in Chicago and having access to so much culture, excitement, and beauty that only a major city can offer. I am not sure where I will end up in the future, but for now I am enjoying where I’m at!
