There is so much going on in the world today that most days my head feels heavy. Between political differences, racial inequality, unethical treatment of women and girls by those in power and my own life crossroads, life is challenging. I am appalled and disgusted by these situations, but I am not sure how to respond. I can speak about my outrage, and I can even write a blog post or two about the importance of honesty and of equality and of love, but is that enough? Is expressing my beliefs enough or do I need to take action? I don’t want to hope that others take a stand; I don’t want to pretend that I don’t have an opinion so that I don’t upset others with my thoughts.
I have written a few times about the type of legacy I want to leave behind. What will people say about me at my funeral? I want them to say more than, “Oh she had strong opinions.” I want to be known for action, for standing up against what I believe is wrong and standing up for what I believe in. A few weeks ago, I attended a Cub’s game, and made a decision to kneel in solidarity with those protesting racial discrimination. I love my country and my flag, but I love that all men and women should be treated fairly. I choose to speak out about injustice and take actions that demonstrate my choices because not choosing is still a decision. Not doing anything is a choice, a choice I am no longer willing to make.
