Recapping the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl

Recapping the 2011 Champs Sports Bowl

It was one heck of a defensive game. However mistakes and blown coverages helped Florida State beat Notre Dame 18-14. On paper it looked like a lot of points would be scored, boy were we proved wrong.

Notre Dame scored the first touchdown when safety Zeke Motta returned a Seminole fumble 29 yards to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. Both teams defenses would take over for the rest of the quarter so the Fighting Irish took that 7-0 lead in the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd quarter neither team was able to get past midfield.

The Irish took their 7-0 lead into halftime. Notre Dame would finally break the ice in the 2nd half when Tommy Rees found Michael Floyd for a 5 yard touchdown pass to take a 14-0 lead.

The 'Noles would only answer with a field goal before the 4th quarter, ND lead 14-3. The 4th quarter is when FSU came back to win the game. #2 Quarterback Andrew Hendrix threw an interception at the start of the 4th quarter which lead to FSU Quaterback E.J. Manuel throwing a 18 yard touchdown pass to receiver Bert Reed to cut the Irish lead to 14-9.

They attempted a 2 point conversion afterwards but failed. Notre Dame punted twice on their next 2 possessions. Florida State scored on their 2 following possessions, an E.J. Manuel touchdown pass to Wide Receiver Rashad Green {followed by another failed 2PC attempt} along with a 29 yard field goal gave the Seminoles a 18-14 lead and they never looked back.

Any attempt at a Fighting Irish comeback was hampered by a couple more turnovers. So the Irish finish the season with an 8-5 record. They didn't get that elusive 9th win which would have been the teams first 9 win season since 2006. But they do finish with their best season since 2006 and have a lot to look forward to in 2012.
