Taj Gibson will not play Tuesday against the
76ers 29ers (11-16) at the United Center after suffering a concussion in Saturday's loss to the Clippers. With Joakim Noah expected out until All-Star Weekend, Kurt Thomas will start at center with Carlos Boozer at the power forward and Omer Asik coming off the bench with Taj out, K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reported on his Twitter page:
Taj out tonite. Thomas worked with starters again at shootaround and will start.
Taj will travel with the team to D.C., he added:
Taj will travel with team to DC tonite and a determination on his status will be made on Wednesday.
Given Thomas and Asik being foul machines, it's to be expected the Bulls won't prepare a three-man rotation at the four and five, but a ten-man rotation for the game including either Brian Scalabrine or James Johnson rotating off the bench with Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver, and C.J. Watson.
Monday, Taj was considered "doubtful" and Coach Thibodeau wouldn't commit to Thomas or Omer starting if Taj was unavailable.
Saturday, Thomas fouled out in less than 16 minutes of hacking on Blake Griffin, scoring three points on 1-for-4 shooting and 1-for-2 at the FT line. He's only played 29 minutes all season in eight games of mostly garbage time, scoring five total points on 2-for-6 shooting with five rebounds, a block, a turnover, and nine fouls.
Taj has scored 9.3 PPG playing 24 of the Bulls 25 games this season. He's shot 46.8% from the field with 1.4 BPG and 6.3 RPG -- rebounding at an offensive rate of 10.4% and a defensive rate of 18.2 for a total rate of 14.4%. With Taj on the floor, the Bulls are scoring 101 points per 100 possessions -- roughly four-to-five below their total Offensive Rating of 105.8 -- but allowing 100, slightly less than the team's cumulative 101.8 Defensive Rating.
