My name is Alisa Steady and I'm a visual artist. I am lucky enough to have been given an opportunity to blog for ChicagoNow and I'm looking forward to it! I have a lot to say. Thoughts. Opinions. Rah-Rah cheerleading for the dreamer who wants to make a creative life for him or herself.
I live about 50 miles north of Chicago, on the Wisconsin boarder, close enough to hear the 'accent' - "I live in Ken'no'sha an' stuff." I don't live in Kenosha, that's in Wisconsin. I do live - you know the black line on a map that divides states? I live on the black line. My bedroom is in Illinois, but my living room's in Wisconsin kind of thing.
I've been an artist all my life, but have only really accepted to the core of my being that I am one very recently. I fought it a lot. Not absolutely sure why, but one hint might be that all my life I've been told you really can't make a living being an artist. And I believed it!! That's a 'doh' moment if I ever heard one. Truth of the matter is - how many of us out there are 'working for the weekend' 'making a living in a 9 - 5er' or 'just making ends meet.' I wager a lot of us. And I'll bet a lot of us have been told that what we really really really want to do is not going to bring home the bacon. Do I hear an AMEN in the house?
What I'd like to blog about is art. Art issues. Art cunundrums. Art people. Anything art. And, how to block out the naysayers and really pursue a dream. This doesn't just apply to artists. It applies to anyone. It's just coming from a person who happens to be an artist.
So, if you've made it this far - kudos! I promise to post interesting thought provoking ideas, albeit fact-checking might be on the back burner...but hey, I'm an artist. I'm emotional. I'm over the top. And I'm a bit flakey.
