On Friday I was lucky enough to be able to crash a softball game at Wrigley Field. The game was hosted by Starwood Preferred Guest for members of its loyalty program who had accrued enough points to partake in this awesome event. Also on hand adding to the festive climate were Clark the Cub and former Cubs Dave Otto and Bill Campbell.
Upon our arrival we were assigned to one of eight teams all named after Starwood Hotels (I was on Le Meridien, but the other teams were Four Points, St. Regis, Sheraton, Westin, Luxury Collection, Aloft and W). The format was a single-elimination tournament (with first round losers playing another consolation game) and we played two games at a time while the other teams took a tour of Wrigley, watched games or ate. The games were configured so that home plate was next to each foul pole and our play was confined to the outfield so as not to mess up the infield for the Cubs. In the first round my team ran into Luxury Collection, the eventual Champs but we were able to eek out a win in extra innings against our second round opponent.
However, the results of the games I played on Wrigley will always take a back seat in my memory to the experience of just being able to play on Wrigley Field. Everyone in attendance was just as giddy as I was to play where the Cubs have been playing for 98 years.
I also managed to take my softball trophy, the Kup, from the Irv Kupcinet Chicago Media League and get a few pictures of that at Wrigley.
