The death of an artist routinely provokes a re-examination
of that artist's career, so it is no surprise that I found myself youtubing
Sidney Lumet movies quite regularly this weekend. I watched the switch-blade
scene in 12 Angry Men and the "Attica!"
scene in Dog Day Afternoon, but
the two scenes I enjoyed most were from Lumet's 1976 classic Network: the "money speech" by the great Ned Beatty, and
Howard Beale's infamous rant, when he announces to all the television-watching
world that "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"
The madman Beale's prophetic declaration is among the most memorable speeches in American cinema. Most people at some point get fed up with... something, and find themselves defiant and courageous and "mad as hell." In fact, I experience those feelings quite often when watching sports. "Why can't it be this way instead of that?" I ask myself. And so, in that spirit, it's time for The Howard Beale Memorial "Mad as Hell" list: 6 Things in Sports That Gotta Go.
