In Chicago there are many theatres to choose from, and I'm lucky to have some great ones right in Edgewater (the 48th Ward). If you are near Chicago's Far North Side here are some performances to check out.
Chicago Magazine's Fall Culture Guide 2012 includes a list of a list of "ten must-see plays." Of these, two are shows at Edgwater theatres
Chicago Shakespeare Theatre has brought the National Theatre of Scotland's Black Watch back to the Broadway Armory after a popular Chicago debut in the same location last year. I missed this last year. I don't want to miss it again.
The nearby NeoFuturists are applying their outrageous, rapid fire playlet format to 44 Plays for 44 Presidents as well as their signature show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. (These are particular good options for those with short attention spans.)
Rivendell Theatre's acclaimed production of Wrens will be closing soon. I haven't yet been in their new space on Ridge Avenue, but I've heard it's great.
Raven Theatre is currently running the Hollywood-themed The Big Knife, but I must admit that I'm more looking forward to the thriller Boy Gets Girl coming later in the season.
Those are just a few local options. To see more, check out the event listings and calendar on the 48th Ward Arts page, which also includes information about what artists from our neighborhood are doing around Chicago.
