Making Rock 'N' Roll History!
Theatre At The Center brings to the stage a once in a lifetime unplanned jam session orchestrated by producer and owner Sam Phillips that took place on December 4, 1956, where four young musicians "happened upon recording" at Sun Records. This particular night will be forever etched in ‘Rock n Roll' history, where Elvis Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis came together as the Million Dollar Quartet!
Written by Colin Escott, and Floyd Mutrux, Million Dollar Quartet tells the story how Sam Phillips was the mastermind behind the four men getting together at Sun Records (a former car shop) in Memphis Tennessee to create a masterpiece of music that many felt was just a fad.
Sam Phillips (Sean Fortunato) who narrates the story tells us how he met the talented quartet Johnny Cash (Tommy Malouf), Jerry Lee Lewis (Michael Kurowski), ‘Carl Perkins (Zachary Stevenson) and Elvis Presley (Zach Sorrow), who at the time were finding their way in their music careers.
Phillips also shares how he played a significant role in developing rock and roll and how he took a chance on each of the undiscovered and gifted men and developed the future singers into musical superstars. Cash, ‘The Man In Black’ ‘Jerry Lee, ‘The Wild Man,' Perkins, ‘The King of Rockabilly’ and Elvis ‘The King of Rock and Roll!'
Daryl Brooks, who has directed hits at Black Ensemble Theater and Porchlight Theater provided an interesting twist by bringing in Aeriel Williams to play Dyanne; and it worked! Williams' voice is exceptional, and she wowed the audience with her range and power. She only sung two songs but definitely got the loudest applause. Kudos to Theatre At The Center for opening the door to diversity and showing Indiana another great talent at the theater!
Zachary Stevenson who blew us away in his role as Buddy Holly does a good Carl Perkins; so does Michael Kurowski as Jerry Lee Lewis and Zach Sorrow as Elvis Presley; which isn't an easy task; however Tommy Malouf was great as Cash. His voice and demeanor made you feel like you were looking at a young Jonny Cash fighting against his beliefs and fame.
