Usually, Morgan Freeman uses his signature voice for documentaries, commercials, and the Obama campaign. But, now, his iconic voice is appearing in a new ad for marriage equality.
"America stands at the dawn of a new day," Freeman says in the ad.
The iconic actor is narrating a new TV spot for the Human Rights Campaign in support of same-sex marriage released by the Human Rights Campaign. The commercial, titled "Dawn of a New Day for Marriage Equality," will begin airing nationally today, Sunday, according to The Advocate.
"Freedom, justice and human dignity have always guided our journey toward a more perfect union. Now across our country, we are standing together for the right of gay and lesbian Americans to marry the person they love."
An ad like this shouldn't be a total surprise: Voters in Minnesota, Washington, Maine and Maryland passed ballot measures on November 6 affirming the legality of same-sex marriage, while in Minnesota voters rejected a ban on those unions. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to decide soon whether to hear oral arguments on cases challenging the legality of the Defense of Marriage Act.
HRC President Chad Griffin said in a statement. "As we continue the march toward full equality in legislatures and the courts, it is crystal clear that the prospect of an equal future is no longer up for debate; the question now is how soon it will arrive...This year proved to be a pivotal turning point in the movement for marriage equality and now we press onward with renewed vigor and public opinion squarely on our side."
This isn't the first time Freeman has come out in support of same-sex couples. He told Newsweek earlier this year:
"I grew up in the South but I started dancing in my twenties when I got out of the Air Force, and studying dance, you’re surrounded by gay guys all the time. You get to know them and you have to shift gears!"
Well done, Morgan...way to be apart of the fight!
