I am a big fan of the Food Network. Like many people, I like watching the food competition shows like Chopped, Beat Bobby Flay, and the Food Network Star. To me, being a great chef is more than just being great in a restaurant. Being a great chef is proving your greatness amongst other great chefs.
For years the fans of the Food Network have seen some of the top chefs in the country competing against one another in cooking competitions. Some of the top chefs who regularly competes in cooking competition on the Food Network includes Bobby Flay, Sunny Anderson, Katie Lee, Chicago’s Jeff Mauro, Marcela Valladoid, Marc Murphy, Aaron Sanchez, Alex Guarnaschelli, Mario Batali, Marcus Samuelsson, Michael Symon, Anne Burrell, and Robert Irvine to name a few. Heck, even Oprah’s one time personal chef Art Smith has entered cooking competitions on the Food Network. So why won’t Giada enter any cooking competitions? I mean she has several successful shows on the Food Network including Giadi in Italy and Giada Entertains. She is also a judge on the Food Network Star where she judges other chefs and home cooks. So why won’t she enter cooking competitions?
Maybe the best question is: Why is Giada so afraid to enter cooking competitions? De Laurentiis once entered a Iron Chef competition as Bobby Flay’s partner after Flay had promise her they would win against Mario Batali and Rachael Ray. Unfortunately, Flay could not keep his promise as he and De Laurentiis ended up losing to Batali and Ray. The loss as De Laurentiis calls it, is her biggest regret according to her 2014 interview in The Hamptons Magazine. De Laurentiis competed in the cooking competition despite being warned not to do so by her husband and her agent. Now she admits people keeps asking her how did she lose to Rachael Ray. For a chef such as De Laurentiis who graduated from Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and who worked for Wolfgang Puck at Spago it must be embarrassing to lose to Rachael Ray. The problem is that she and Bobby Flay lost to Mario Batali and Rachael Ray. Batali as many may know, is one of the most respected Italian chefs in the country; so losing to him is no big deal. Ray on the other hand, is a home cook turn television host and cookbook author. She is also the host and judge of Worst Cooks in America on the Food Network. Ray like De Laurentiis is also afraid to enter cooking competitions but is quick to judge other people's cooking.
De Laurentiis has not appeared on the Rachael Ray show since 2014; the year she said losing to Ray was her biggest regret. Before her comment, she had appeared on the Rachael Ray show six times leading some media members to speculate a feud between them.
I may not know if there is a feud but I do know that both De Laurentiis and Ray are afraid to enter cooking competitions despite judging other contestants cooking in competitions. Let’s add actress turn Food Network host and judge Valerie Bertinelli and singer turn Food Network host Trisha Yearwood to the afraid to enter cooking competitions list. I can get why Ray, Yearwood, and Bertinelli are afraid to enter but De Laurentiis is a professional chef with a resume a mile long. She should be the main chef trying to prove her greatness by winning competitions. Sunny Anderson once lost a cooking competition to former boxer Laila Ali on Chopped but at least she competed. Anderson even came back on Chopped and was the first contestant to leave against her cast members of The Kitchen. Anderson may lose but at least she competes. Maybe Giada is running from cooking competitions because she knows her cooking is not that good.
