Lunges are by far the best category of leg exercises.  Lunges are an amazing exercise for toning and tightening all the muscles in your legs and butt.  They require balance, so they also offer good joint stability training.  There are so many options -  you can do them stationary, moving forward or backwards.  Here is an example of a popular lunge variation - the curtsy lunge.  As with any lunge, make sure you are maintaining good posture and angles in your knees.  I suggest doing them at first without weights for 4 sets and 12-15 reps.  Once you have mastered the form, add your dumbbells.

Step back.  When you step back, make sure it is far enough to be abe to lower down while maintaining your posture.  Your step will cross over to the oppsite side of you body.
