I am a firm believer that you must have breakfast before leaving the house. I would never let my kids out of the house without something in their stomach. But truthfully, about 1-2 times a week, I cannot get my breakfast made. It comes down to them or me. If you are a parent, you know what I mean. Some may say well why don’t you simply eat what they are – the truth is I do. But every time I make mine – they ask for it. For example, they start with I want a yogurt. So great I get them a yogurt. Then, I will start making myself a whole-wheat english muffin – with my favorite peanut butter. So ‘pop’ it goes right out of the toaster. They hear it, then smell it, then see it. ‘Mom I want an english muffin too.’ And there you have it! My breakfast is never getting made. As soon as one of them asks for something , then they all want the same thing. So then I have to wait for three other people’s english muffins, take the time to spread the PB, refill a milk here, clean up the middle one’s spilled milk there (it happens every day),make lunches and BAM! – my stomach is still empty. Right when I think I am going to make my English Muffin, I am cleaning them up and one of them wants help going to the bathroom. Any yes, I have to make my husband’s too. I would ask for a 6-slice toaster for Christmas, but it doesn’t fit in the cabinet.
My solution is to treat myself to someone else’s coffee and a breakfast sandwich at one of these places. They may not be organic or made with the love of my favorite whole wheat english muffin, with ½ a banana and peanut butter, but they are tasty and the calories and protein count is just right. Keep in mind, that oatmeal at all these places are great. Do not ever under-estimate the value of a good bowl of oatmeal. But I do love a breakfast sandwich ( the fat is a little high).
