Cubs rise as opponents fall this off-season

The new Cubs regime is off to a spectacular start and they’ve made only two big-league roster moves.

Albert Pujols, arguably he best player in the game, has left your biggest rival.

The Brewers will lose Prince Fielder, their undisputed leader, to free agency (and potentially wind up on the Northside).  And Ryan Braun, the 2011 National League Most Valuable Player, is facing a possible 50-game suspension.

The Astros are departing the Central Division, which automatically enhances the Cubs' odds to make the playoffs.

Meanwhile, the White Sox -- a team the Cubs play six times a year -- have dealt their closer, lost a key starter and named a skipper who has never managed a game at any level.

The way is paved for Theo Epstein and the Cubs.

  • So if all the teams leave the division, the Cubs will be undisputed champions. No, they would still find a way to blow it.
