Derrick Lee will be back in the Cubs lineup on Friday in St. Louis.
"We found out (Thursday) morning that Derrek's grandfather has been put in hospice," said Cubs Bench Coach Alan Trammell. "He needed to get away. Our thoughts and prayers are with Derrek and his family. He'll be back with us tomorrow."
Time off benefits Colvin
Manager Lou Piniella gave Tyler Colvin a few days off at the tail-end of the Cubs' last homestand. And the rookie, first-rounder responded with a stellar series against the Giants.
"It was a great move to (allow him to) sit back and watch and kind of regroup," Trammell said. "He got some big hits for us in this series, none bigger than the one yesterday (Wednesday). (Giants starter Barry) Zito just got a one-run lead, you'd think a veteran pitching is just going to shut you down and boom he hits one into McCovey Cove."
