The ultimate trifecta is complete! In case you're new here some of my most popular posts include Top 8 Worst Love Sex and Dating Songs and Get Laid Tonight Top Ten Hottest Sex Songs. I had a blast writing both of those posts and my readers mutually enjoyed it.
But what JOY LOVE is really all about is love. The kind that makes your heart flutter, your lips flush and your eyes well with tears of joy. I searched high and low and I found the Top 10 Best Love songs that artfully managed to squeeze the boundless emotion we call love into three to five minute pieces of audio art. EnJOY!
Whether it be a Top 100 or Top 10 list and no matter the author this song always makes the list when it comes to best love songs. So this is my obligatory Lonestar mention.
It truly is a lovely song but I heard it so much as a teenager at every school dance and every wedding reception as an adult that it’s beauty got somewhat watered down. Thus, this song only comes in at number 10.
“I've never been this close to anyone or anything I can hear your thoughts I can see your dreams” - Lonestar
9. Justify My Love-Madonna (this video is NOT safe for work)
So this one is probably a shocker to some of you out there! Most people don’t think of this song when brainstorming best love songs. I considered amending my Top 10 hottest sex songs and adding this to the list but I decided against it.
Although it is by the ever so controversial Madonna this song isn’t about just getting laid. This is a very intimate and erotic song about the titillating side of being in love. And the icing on the cake is that the video is a magnificent piece of art so it absolutely had to make the list.
“I want to kiss you in Paris I want to hold your hand in Rome I want to run naked in a rainstorm Make love in a train cross-country” -Madonna
This a very under rated ballad. Most of you probably never heard this or forgot it existed. It’s smooth, sincere and soulful. Monifah sings it like she means it and the lyrics describe the best part of being in love with the right person.
“And if the sun don't shine, you brighten up my day And if the rain should fall, it never seems to fall my way And when it's cold outside, you're there to keep me warm Those days I'm feeling weak, you make me feel so strong” -Monifa
This entire song is pure poetry. Speaking of love, I fall in love with Darren Hayes every time I hear it. Is it just me or does he totally sound like Michael Jackson in this song?
Whether you agree or disagree this song has “best love song” written all over it; on the surface, between the lines and even in the melody. This song is bliss and passion rolled into one.
“And nobody knows you like I do The world doesn't understand But I grow stronger in your hands” –Darren Hayes
This one is an absolute classic. I would be a total fraud if I did not get Al Green on the list. This song is very grown up. Perhaps I feel that way because it’s from my parent’s era but either way it describes a mature love. And Al Green croons with some serious soul!
“Let me say that since, baby Since we've been together Ooo... Loving you forever Is what I... need... Let me... be the one you come running to... I'll... never be untrue...”
This song gives me chills! Or perhaps there is a draft in my apartment as I’m writing this…kidding. All jokes aside, this song is extra special. Being in the business of love I’ve heard a lot of love songs but never one like this.
I could listen to it a thousand times and it would give me the same warm and fuzzies it gave me the first time I heard it. That’s a real love song. I’m going to have to go ahead and quote the whole thing it’s just that beautiful.
“Day one I stumbled through hello on 5th avenue
Day two We grabbed a bite to eat and talked all afternoon Caught a movie on day 14
And day 67 she said, "I love you" to me
Day 116 I asked her what she was doing for the rest of my life
Day 189 Oh I almost lost that girl to my foolish pride She said, "I do" on day 482 And gave me a son on day 761
Day 18,253 Well honey, that's fifty years Yeah, here's to you and me
Day one I thank god I said hello on 5th avenue” –Chris Cagle
I’ve always been favorably biased toward Aladdin as one of my favorite Disney movies because they named the princess after me. But my swollen ego aside this truly is one of the most terrific love songs. When you find your soul mate it really does open up a whole new world.
“Unbelievable sights Indescribable feelings Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling Through an endless diamond sky
A whole new world (Don't you dare close your eyes) A hundred thousand things to see (don't hold your breath, it gets better) I'm like a shooting star I've come so far I can't go back To where I used to be”-Aladdin & Jasmine
This is another classic. If you were born in the 80s and were therefore in middle school at some point in the 90s you know ALL about this song. I loved this song as a tween but I wasn’t emotionally mature enough to ‘get’ it. Now I do.
As always, Darren Hayes’s lyrics are poetry whether he is writing as Savage Garden or solo. The vocals can’t be beat here. Darren’s voice makes me and 80s babies everywhere smile and swoon.
Also, the video for this song is really pretty. Simple but pretty. This one came close to coming in at number one but was bumped out only by…well you’ll see when you get there.
“And when the stars are shining brightly in the velvet sky, I'll make a wish send it to heaven Then make you want to cry The tears of joy for all the pleasure and the certainty That we're surrounded by the comfort and protection of The highest powers In lonely hours The tears devour you” –Savage Garden
Oh Celine! She’s another one who’s a must have on any list of best love songs. There are so many Celine Dion power ballads to choose from but this is the one that makes my soul sing. Every word of this song is so sweet and super profound.
And just a little JOY LOVE trivia as I was writing this blog post I was singing along to this song on repeat and every time it played I sung along and tried to hit that note…you know the note I’m talking about. And one time I thought I hit it but that’s probably because I’m tone deaf and really couldn’t hear myself. Or maybe I really did hit it. The world will never know.
I think my neighbors hate me. Anyway real love is tolerating someone’s bad Celine Dion sing alongs. If you find someone who can do that you’ve found the one lol!
“You were my strength when I was weak You were my voice when I couldn't speak You were my eyes when I couldn't see You saw the best there was in me Lifted me up when I couldn't reach You gave me faith 'coz you believed I'm everything I am Because you loved me
You were always there for me The tender wind that carried me A light in the dark shining your love into my life You've been my inspiration Through the lies you were the truth My world is a better place because of you” –Celine Dion
*sigh* Yup! Darren and his band Savage Garden made the list once again. I swear I was as objective as possible in compiling this list. But the best is the best and it speaks for itself. And I’m going to let it do just that. No commentary here. I will let the song speak for itself.
I Knew I Loved You Before I Met You-Savage Garden
Maybe it's intuition But some things you just don't question Like in your eyes I see my future in an instant and there it goes I think I've found my best friend I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe
I knew I loved you before I met you I think I dreamed you into life I knew I loved you before I met you I have been waiting all my life
There's just no rhyme or reason only this sense of completion and in your eyes I see the missing pieces I'm searching for I think I found my way home I know that it might sound more than a little crazy but I believe
A thousand angels dance around you I am complete now that I found you
Did I leave out anything? What are your favorite love songs?
