Who to follow on Twitter ...

Now, I've talked a lot about my Twitter reading in here, and have passed along hundreds of links from that reading, but I recently realized that I've never really pointed out my sources on Twitter.  Of course, I read nearly 600 Twitter feeds on a daily basis, but the following lists are the main sources that I have for either job leads (hey, I've sent out 99 resumes so far in April!) or job news.

In the following I have tried to keep the focus on Chicago, and on the job search specifically (not straying into "people at target companies", which are certainly significant factors in my reading, but aren't of "general interest").  While there are some non-local folks in here, I've tried to make sure that if they're on the lists below, they're a good source of useful info.

Anyway, the following are the Twitter feeds from which I get the bulk of my job leads:

                    http://twitter.com/jobschicago

                    http://twitter.com/jobchicago

                    http://twitter.com/ChicagoWork

                    http://twitter.com/WriterJobsCHI

                    http://twitter.com/chicagowebjobs

                    http://twitter.com/tmj_chi_jobs

                    http://twitter.com/tmj_chi_writing

                    http://twitter.com/tmj_chi_adv

                    http://twitter.com/PRSAjobcenter

                    http://twitter.com/prwork

                    http://twitter.com/CBforJobSeekers

... to which you might want to add http://twitter.com/CLjobsIL which is CraigsList's Illinois job board, although I don't "follow" that because the noise-to-signal ratio (in that it features jobs from all over the state) would totally bog down my Twitter reading!

This next bunch are local folks who feature jobs and other job-search and networking info:

                    http://twitter.com/VeronicaLudwig

                    http://twitter.com/connectworkchi

                    http://twitter.com/AmyZagroba

Finally, there's a list of "job industry" things and people that I get a lot of the links that show up in here on Fridays ... these range from regional recruiters to companies that offer various services (and I'm not endorsing any particularly), but all of which either feature job openings or info on the job search.

                    http://twitter.com/BigShoesNetwork

                    http://twitter.com/betterjobsearch

                    http://twitter.com/CareerRocketeer

                    http://twitter.com/JobConcierge

                    http://twitter.com/MATRIXResources

                    http://twitter.com/AquentJobs

                    http://twitter.com/TalentZooJobs

                    http://twitter.com/MonsterKAW

                    http://twitter.com/blogging4jobs

                    http://twitter.com/TheJobQuest

                    http://twitter.com/PinkSlipped

                    http://twitter.com/jacobshare

Again, these are all somewhat skewed towards my own job search, but I figured that the Chicago readers out there could use a list of where I find all those job openings that I keep firing off resumes to, as well as letting folks know where most of those links come from.

As always with Twitter, it helps to see who folks you're reading are re-Tweeting and are "following", building up your own targeted list involves a lot of poking around and seeing who knows who who's hooked into what.  Happy clicking!

  • Hi Brendan,

Twitter alerts are great for finding job leads as are Google alerts. See http://bit.ly/dxRmRj for how to set them up.

    Happy JobStalking!
