Swayze taught us to never give up

I am heartbroken to lose Patrick Swayze. He really was a miracle dude, not only because his movies still sweep me off my feet, but because he managed to live his life with passion and intensity despite a desperate prognosis and to maintain his dignity in the face of the kind of stardom that destroys most people in Hollywood.
When Swayze spoke with Barbara Walters recently about his fight with pancreatic cancer, he told her, "I keep my heart and my soul and my spirit open to miracles."
In this blog, I don't often dwell on the bad days that come with unemployment. But I've had them. I've seen them. I've heard from so many people in this city who have been unemployed for nine months, a year. People who have lost all their credit, spent their retirement money to pay the bills and have seen their relationships dissolve under the stress of poverty. Every day that goes by without a job offer, it gets harder to continue to believe in our worth, to laugh at ourselves, to believe that maybe, just maybe, today will be the day that a miracle will happen.
If Swayze taught me anything these 20 months, it is that no matter what, we all need to keep going, especially on the days when we're scared to death that a miracle may never come.
Beautiful post, Julie.
You make a wonderful point about him; in a mess of tasteless and outrageous celebrity behavior, Swayze did always seem rather normal and human. I didn't catch the Walters interview when it aired, but I really like hearing he had such a positive attitude.
patrick swayze will alwayz be missed..
