Empire Avenue

As I was looking through Mashable's nominee's for their 5th annual Mashable awards, I started looking at the up and coming social media networks they featured. I decided to check all of them out and came across this little nugget called Empire Avenue. I am still exploring this network but it is interesting to say the least.

Empire Avenue creates a social stock market that allows you to not only see what your value is but the value of others. It allows you to add all your social networks which helps boost your value and allows you to earn badges along the way. When creating an account, you are not creating a user name but rather your ticker name. Empire Avenue also likes to call their money "eaves" and allows you to buy stock and sell stock with other members of the network. The more valuable you are, the higher your share price will be as well as your net worth in eaves.

Empire Avenue allows you to manage your own portfolio where you track all the investments you have made on other individuals. Like the real stock market, you have the ability to hire "advisors" that will help you along the way as you attempt to increase your social value. These advisors can help you out with your Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Flickr and Empire Avenue accounts.

As I was working on getting the hang of the network, one complaint that I had is the number of e-mails that I received in my inbox. As soon as I signed up, it seemed like a barrage of users converged to my account and bought up some shares. Besides flooding my inbox, it left me the impression that the individuals of this network were hardcore users that would buy my shares but send a message requesting I buy some shares from them or recommend them. Although I am sure this is all a part of the game, I expected that you would be allowed to add your friends from Facebook and your followers on Twitter and other networks and be able to create a competition between each other. Instead, individuals from Malaysia are allowed to jump in and purchase shares from you whenever they want. Thankfully, I discovered their privacy settings and now allow only my Facebook friends and Twitter followers to add me on Empire Avenue.

As far as companies go, Empire Avenue allows you to create a business account. I find this to be great to have because it can lead to the potential of businesses competing against one another in the social media world.

I still have much to learn on this network and will post another update later this week on my experience with Empire Avenue. I have posted a link to Empire Avenue if you want to sign up and try out as well as the Mashable Nominee's for 2011. Until then, if you want to add me on Empire Avenue my ticker is ARadevski27
