Annual Jam Band: The new tracks

Annual Jam Band: The new tracks
I wouldn’t be doing this music blog right if I didn’t share some of my own tunes. OUR tunes. The Annual Jam Band is a collaborative (and now ten-day-long) project that gathers from the far reaches of the country once a year to informally rock out a few parties, then move on to Rockford for... A.V. Club Undercover: Music you know played by indie bands you should

Rock music is so rarely mainstream anymore (and Dave Grohl cheated). Instead it has splintered off into a hundred-thousand swell indie rock-pop-groove-dance-jam bands who tour relentlessly and grow increasingly spectacular mustaches just to gain your attention. But AVClub.com (The Onion’s sister site – I may have previously mentioned them over and over again) has a... Read more »

Cornershop: Remember them? They're jamming anyway...

Behind every “one hit wonder” is a story. Sometimes it’s a long, rewarding struggle — sometimes it’s instant fame followed by a sophomore cliff-dive — but sometimes those bands aren’t one-hit-wonders at all because they’ve been there in the background of your life for years. I still pull out Cornershop’s 1997 album When I Was Born for... Read more »

Lucky Boys Confusion Guitarist Joe Sell Left Us Too Soon

Lucky Boys Confusion Guitarist Joe Sell Left Us Too Soon
Man… Music news has been pretty heavy the past couple weeks — MCA’s passing, Tom Gabel’s surprising news and now this unexpected event. I’m not going to go into a long rant about what LBC has meant to me — hopefully they’ll keep playing shows. Joe Sell was an incredibly talented musician and remained a... Read more »

Nobody Cares About the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame (and rightfully so)

Nobody Cares About the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame (and rightfully so)
How exactly do you get into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame? Practice, practice, practice? An excellent start. Sell mountains of albums and be annoyingly regular on the radio? That next, yes. Have lots of friends and make nice with all the right folks? There you go. But this is rock ‘n’ roll. Something... Read more »

New Music Monday: |M|O|O|N|

New Music Monday: |M|O|O|N|
Looks like James Murphy — of the recently-retired LCD Soundsystem — has a nephew who is also an electronic musician. (I went with the cold-open to spare us all an obvious torch metaphor. ) Nephew’s band is called |M|O|O|N| (or M.O.O.N. in some places like Facebook). He released a four-song EP last November, a five-song EP... Read more »

Billy Corgan may tumble into the diminishing vortex of his own album concept

The Smashing Pumpkins. Back. Still weird. Since the insane success of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (’95) Billy Corgan has been firing, ranting, wrestling, hiding, re-hiring and making lots of oddly non-rocking music. I know a lot of people whose youthful obsession with this band (and online handle) has lasted into adulthood, but even if... Read more »

Hot Chip preview June release with "Flutes"

Boy, Hot Chip are hitting their stride. Not only are all members engaged in side-projects (The 2 Bears, New Build), but together they’re releasing an album promptly every two years. I love it when a band seems to be as excited about music as I am. If you click on the large words above these... Read more »

Lykke Li - I'm Good I'm Gone (Live)

Thumbnail image for 'Lykke Li - I'm Good I'm Gone (Live)'
We caught this adorable Swede performing on Conan sometime last year ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOGJ1pXK-eE ). There is something infectious here and, to me, it’s obviously the percussive nature of the music (in other performances it’s actually drums). Her best songs strike me as not Lykke Li and whoever playing whatever behind her, but as a JAM. Girl... Read more »

The Flaming Lips' 24-hour song

I swear I’ll post some more words soon… But here’s a link (CLICK ON THE ABOVE TITLE) to some music in case anyone is interested in what parts of a 24-hour song sound like (I’ve listened to several hours of it, but not the entire thing continuously). The song starts every day/night at midnight and... Read more »
