Cloud Gate, also called "The Bean" due to its distinctive shape, is the center piece of Millennium Park, the park within Grant Park. It was designed by artist Anish Kapoor. The sculpture is said to be a depiction of liquid mercury.
Being an artist and an artiste with no sense of humor or knowledge of Chicago culture, Kapoor thought the nick name "Bean" was "completely stupid". If you design something that looks like a legume people will call it a bean. This ain't Noo Yawk, Bawston, Paree, or Kansas.
Cloud Gate is made up of 168 stainless steel plates that are welded together and highly polished. There are no visible seems on the exterior shell of the piece. It weighs in at 110 tons. The shape of Cloud Gate distorts anything reflected in it. It offers great photographic opportunities, if only people would not create sight litter. (Humor for humans who have overly tender sensitivities)
Millennium Park is the second most visited tourist attraction in chicago, Navy Pier being the first. Cloud Gate draws most of the visitors.
