Amid all of the horrible things that have occurred in the world, especially in our little corner of the world, today children were given hope! As the Chicago area joined together to watch the the last baseball game in the US Little League World Series, either alone, or in large groups downtown, in bars, and especially on the south side, we, together, celebrated a victory that changed history-if but for one moment!

The Jackie Robinson West team, a team constantly mentioned because it is comprised solely of African American young men, overcame the odds and the naysayers to WIN the championship!
During the game against Nevada, there was much emotion, not only in the stands, but also in the field. Many tweeters complained, quoting Tom Hanks, stating "There is no crying in baseball",

however they don't understand! In this instance, the 12 and 13 year olds on both teams have a right to cry. They exhibit passion and have fought a good fight for several months to make it to this point. For the JRW team, many never dreamed that they would make it this far, and they did. That alone makes me-a very grown woman cry! Many of these young men are in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania (and have been there for over 9 days) without their parents and family because it was not affordable. Yes, they have the team, but there is nothing like family. Also, both teams carried the weight of their states and their cities. For Jackie Robinson West, they also carried the weight of an entire race and gender, as they represent young African American men that are not traditionally represented well in the media. So-Yes, it is okay to cry in baseball.
But you belong to God, my dear children. You have already won a victory over those people, because the Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. 1 John 4:4 NLT
Today, Illinois cried, Chicago cried, and little African American boys and girls (from age 0-99) across the country cried about baseball and all that the Championship game represented!
