3 hours from Chicago to the 19th century

This won't be my usual sarcastic blog(well, maybe a little), but all in good humor.  Everyone has a different opinion of a good vacation and I just wanted to share a bit about my getaway weekend.  Have you ever been to Galena, Il?  If you haven't heard of it then it's a place you should visit.

It's a very old historic town rich in history.  Galena was the hub of transportation back in the 1800's long before Chicago really put itself on the map.  I went with my sisters and mom and we stayed at the DESOTO HOTEL which opened for business in 1855.  Did you hear me?  I stayed in a hotel where Abraham Lincoln stayed and Ulysses S. Grant campaigned for his presidency.  I find this to be both creepy and cool.  There's been numerous renovations, but it's still intact.  Some of the rooms claim to be haunted and why wouldn't they be?  I was hoping for a ghostly visit.  The entire downtown looks like a scene out of a vintage movie. There's a house still standing that was built in 1826 and boasts to be Galena's oldest house.  Stepping inside there was a scene out of Little House On The Prairie.  I was waiting for Laura Ingalls and Nelly to stop by to inquire where they can find Doc Baker.  I love history, especially when you're literally standing on a place where great things happened.

Not everyone is into history and that's where the shopping comes in.  If you love shopping for antiques, jewelry(my favorite), clothes, food or anything then Galena is the place to be.  It's a great 'girls'  getaway weekend I'm not saying that guys don't like those things, but it's funny to see a couple walking hand in hand and the guy looks like a deer in headlights.  In fact, some places even have separate rooms for the guys to wait for their wives and girlfriends.

I think it's a fun and silly little weekend jaunt.  If you've ever been there then I'd love to hear about it.  Happy ghosts and happy shopping.
