News, pictures and fun stuff from the north woods of Wisconsin from Mark Gostisha at the Forest Lake Country Store.
Spring is here,,, Summer is starting!
We close for about 5 weeks in late March and most of April. The time off allows us to do some deep cleaning in the store, do some plotting and planning for summer and with luck spend quality time with family. So far our mission has been accomplished!
The picture above is little Wood Lake directly behind the store. You can see it from our main dining room! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Today is dark and dreary. Raindrops are littering the surface of the lake, only to disappear in a small ring. We know that soon the brush will be green, lilly pads will emerge, and for all of us that live here year round, the cabins will be full!
It is always enjoyable to watch the north woods change in summer. The snow depth has been in continual recession, but does see some increases for a day or a week. Right now we only have snow on north facing hills, or where ever the snow plows stacked it deep.
All the lakes are open, even in the recesses of back bays ice has given up. And again it looks like water levels are up slightly. WE are gaining ground on seven yers of dought!
As the snow disappears we see the arrival of new things. The first is the swans and some of the diving ducks. It seems as soon as small patch of a river opens up, there are swans floating around the next day, enjoying the little bit of current that opened the river. Next we see the puddle ducks, then when the bigger lakes open we are treated to the return of the loons! Something about the call of the loons, but it is reassuring us that summer is not far behind. Crocuses appear, sometimes even peering thru the snow. And the peepers. The first night you take a walk and hear the spring peepers is always special. The singing starts small. A little open water, and a few peepers start chirpin', then each day there are more puddles and more peepers, til you have quite the evening choir.
We will re-open the store on April 28th. we do remain in our softer schedule until the first full week of June. Then we hit the longer hours of our summer schedule.
