Fishing is tough on the Illinois River because of recent rains. The water is high and fast moving which also caused the lower main parking area and boat launch at Starved Rock State Park near Utica is closed.
The river currently is flooding the parking area and is forecast to remain above flood stage for at least the next couple days. Some trails at Matthiessen State Park will be closed due to the flooding.
When the water is up on the rivers, its best to try fishing the banks where the current will be slower and the water clearer. Fish move up to the banks, even into flooded fields. As the water drops, look for areas where fresh clean water comes into the river.
For now, I'd suggest considering other destinations for fishing. Looks like rain for Wednesday and Thursday again so the Starved Rock ramps may be closed for awhile. I'll keep you posted.
FYI Starved Rock Lodge and upper areas a the park are open.
