Northwoods News

Northwoods News

Sixteen days and counting.  I'll be back up in the Northwoods in just over two weeks to enjoy the great fishing, scenery and visits with my good friends.  Right now, 3 other couples coming up with my wife and I for a week of fishing with a chance of a forth couple joining us.  Can’t wait.  What helps is getting the Northwoods news from Mark at the Forest Lake Country Store.  Let me share with you what he just sent over.

We have expounded on how long and difficult winter has been in the north woods this year.  In a large collective cheer, winter finally gave in.  Ice was off all lakes by May 12th or 14th.  Summer has leapt into the landscape and the sound of boat motors and lawn mowers fills the empty spaces between loon calls, hummingbirds and bicycle wheels.

Memorial Day was a wonderful holiday this year.  For so many people it was their first visit to the north country this year.  It is impressive to be on the edges of families enjoying a north woods family vacation.  Thanks to all that made an effort to make the Forest Lake Country Store a part of their vacation.  You have helped us rebound from a difficult winter.

The area event list is growing.  We are thankful to have so many contributors for the newsletter.  We hope that you enjoy this months letter.

Events in the Store

Apologies first of all for some errant advertising in the Vilas County News Review.  An overzealous sales person used ad copy from last year to promote this years’ summer wine and beer events.  They will run the corrected version soon.  The 2014 schedule is also attached.  These are casual, open house events that give you an opportunity to try new wines and beers.  There is no admission and the goodies are available in flights, buy the glass or bottle.  Our Wednesday and Thursday events became very popular last summer and we look forward to repeating this year.

June 18th 4:30 – 7:30  LOLA Cheese and Wine Night

We have partnered with Carr Valley Cheese to showcase five cheeses from their award winning selection.  Wine will be served as well thru the night.

The staff at LOLA has arranged many silent auction and live auction items.  Tickets are $25 per person or just $50 for two people.  You can buy them at the Artistree Gallery or at the Forest Lake Country Store!  This is a fun event that helps a VERY worthwhile non-profit venture in the Land O’ Lakes community.  They offer a bright future for the business climate of Land O’ Lakes.

August 8th and 9th Ride with Leinie

Friday night we will host a shore lunch fish fry behind the store.  Fish, beans and fried potatoes will be served.  Cost is $12 per person.  Saturday the Wilderness Lakes Trails will have the Ride with Leinie, hosted at the Country Store.  Last year, this annual event attracted over 300 riders from about 25 states.  Dick Leinenkugel will be our MC after the races conclude.  The self guided long ride leaves at 8:30, and the shorter ride, led by Dick Leinenkugel departs at 10:30.  The rides are followed by a brat lunch and festivities and culminates in the two separate drawings for a Trek Bicycle.  Each rider has one raffle ticket included in their ride package.  Additional tickets can be purchased at the store for $5 each or 3 for $10.
