Northwoods News

Last month my wife Judy and I were able to visit Mark and Kris at the Forest Lake Country Store.  We enjoyed a nice breakfast while we did some catching up on the latest things going on in the Land O Lakes area of Wisconsin.

I’m anxious to return and will in May.  And again in June. And probably again in the Fall.
But what makes the time pass is the sharing of Mark’s monthly newsletter.  I enjoy hearing about what’s going on up north.  And from some of the emails that I’ve received from readers, sure looks like they enjoy it too.

Pour yourself a cup of coffee, sit back and enjoy this months newsletter from the Forest Lake Country Store.

We will start our seasonal closure at the end of the day on Saturday April 5th and reopen on Wednesday April 30th. Spring cleaning is at the top of the “to do” list, then a little R & R with the family!
Winter continues to thrive in Vilas County. Night time temps at minus ten or even minus 20 almost seem normal this year. Global warming??? No way, try wood fired warming! Stacks of firewood have disappeared from behind most garages and sheds. Everybody knows the going rate of LP gas. Talk of frozen pipes or septic lines is no longer surprising! Deer trails are three feet deep in the snow. The lakes continue to be layered with over 30 inches of ice and another 30 – 40 inches of snow, slop, and crust. Whenst you receive lemons, maketh thee lemonade!! Where is our lemonade? When all this melts (If??) we should see a very positive impact for the drought stricken lakes. We will not recuperate all of the loss from 7 years of dryness, but there should be a very positive increase in water levels! Cross your fingers!

Business is predictably slow. Many locals have packed up and leave for March and/or April. Not many seasonal people will leave their homes to come see more winter. We use this slowness to plot and plan our summer strategies and to rest our winter weary bones!
