Northwoods News from the Forest Lake Country Store

Last week I was in the Northwoods of Wisconsin with my wife Judy.  One thing is for sure, there's no shortage of snow up there.  Snowmobilers were in Seventh Heaven.   Thy were everywhere.  Local clubs do a great job grooming the trails.  I did get to go ice fishing, but must say it was a bit tough.  Too much snow on the ice which caused water to be pushed up causing slush under the snow and above the ice.

On Sunday, we stopped in for breakfast (I had the #16)  at the Forest Lake Country Store after getting 21 dozen Wigglers for perch bait at the Tackle Box in Land O Lakes.  They were the trick for getting what I call, Perch-cicles.   It was cold up there so when you catch a keeper sized perch, you'd toss it on the ice and in no time..... Perch-cicles.

Here's the latest news from up nnrth from Mark...

Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more,,,

Winter continues on in the north woods, and with style! Cold temps are starting to approach record levels. The last time there was a winter with this extended cold was in 1917 according to the local news this AM. If it continues thru March 20 we will have set a record for the coldest winter on average in nearly 100 years!

What does that mean in up north? The deer are starting to look hungry and are reluctant to depart the easy walking on roads for the tough going in belly deep snow. Be careful if you are driving around, especially in early evening or mornings. The record cold is starting to freeze some wells, seldom used septic fields and some cabins are reporting frozen pipes. Best bet, if you are not up here permanently, is to drain everything back and turn off your water pump between visits to the north woods. Even if the heat is on low, this extreme cold can impact mechanics of a furnace. If you have a caretaker, you may want to ask them to go inside your cabin to check on things.

Another concern as the snow levels grow on the rooftops is to consider having someone clean your roof. The huge burden of snow is starting to collapse many lean to structures, older garages and other out buildings. As the snow continues to grow, there is fear that house roofs will start to give way under the snow load. If you have a caretaker they may provide this service for a fee. If you need someone to clean your roof there is one team of guys that we know that perform quality work. Jim and Brian Achuff are professional and insured. You can reach Brian at 715 617 3731.

New in the Store

This is the time of year that we are looking to reduce our inventories and to look for new items for the coming summer. Check the clearance racks for some outstanding specials on wine, beer and other items! Nearly every day we are adding a new item or two to the clearance rack!

We will make an appeal to our customers to help us in a different way. To make a living in the north woods requires us to offer diversity, a ton of diversity! We are a restaurant, we offer 200 different wines and 150 craft beers and then we have all the boutique items. The diversity challenges us. Trying to influence new customers to stop is an even bigger challenge! It seems more and more people are using their smart phones to find a place to eat or shop when they are away from their home turf.

Two of the highest regarded dining web sites are Yelp and Travel Advisor. Honest reviews from our customers may help us find a few new customers. Here are hot links to both Yelp and Trip Advisor. If you have a few minutes, we would appreciate any support that you can offer us in the form of a positive review. Yelp: Trip Advisor:

Wine Specials Better than a Bakers Dozen Deal!!! If you are looking to fill a few holes in your wine inventory with some mid price wine here are some great wine values for you! Folie a Deaux makes some of the best wines for the dollar spent. Here is a little about the winery:

Folie à Deux was founded in 1981 by two psychiatrists, who took the name from a psychiatric term for a fantasy or delusion shared by two people. They took their passion for great wines and pooled their effort to create exceptional wines at a value price!

Their Russian River Valley Chardonnay, Dry Creek Zinfandel and Alexander Valley Merlot embody a perfect fusion of grape variety and growing region. Showcasing vibrant aromas and flavors, they offer a striking balance of intensity and accessibility.

We invite you to savor our fine wines and — with a glass by your side — create your very own folie à deux! Here are your wine choices:

Sonoma 2010 Merlot Crafted primarily from vineyards in the cooler portions of Alexander Valley, this deliciously approachable Merlot offers ripe, juicy, black cherry flavors complemented by enticing notes of vanilla, tea and cocoa. Sonoma Coast 2011 Pinot Noir is deeply concentrated with intense aromas of ripe plum, dark cherry and raspberry followed by subtle hints of earthy truffle and spice. Precise and textured, this wine has dark, briary fruit, chocolate and notes of tobacco leaf on the palate.

Dry Creek Valley 2010 Zinfandel Concentrated, juicy and jammy, our classic Zinfandel’s bright blackberry and ripe plum fruit is complemented by the characteristic black pepper spice tones that give the varietal its invigorating zestiness.

Russian River Valley 2010 Chardonnay Seductive, complex aromas of honey, green apple, tropical fruits, vanilla and baking bread introduce juicy apple, pineapple and tropical fruit flavors with light butter notes from partial malolactic fermentation and crisp balancing acidity.

Orders must be received via Email by Sunday March 2nd. Wine will be ready to pick up in the store on Thursday March 6th.

News from the Northwoods

Recently the store was visited by Don Dziedzina. Don is the fishing celebrity of Illinois Outdoors television and Fishing and Outdoor Radio. So what does an outdoor celebrity, and his wife Judy. do with vacation time in the north woods? Man, he was up in Land O’ Lakes ice fishing and enjoying the Frozen Tozen event in Boulder Junction. My gut tells me there will be part of their north woods arctic style adventure on a future episode of his television show. Look for Don on Facebook and learn more at his web site (and

There is news from several great customers from down south with ties to the north woods. First of all Susan Casey. She enjoys all of her spare time in Presque Isle when she is not home in Madison. Recently her son entered a photography contest, with a photo of the north woods, and stands a chance to win an Africa photo-safari with the winner based on popular votes! Here's the link to his photo:

His love of the north woods is evident with this photo. If you can help him win an African photo safari with a yes vote it would be appreciated!
