Less than 24 hours from now I'll be heading north on Rt. 51. First stop will be the Northwoods of Wisconsin. From there off to Minnesota for the Fishing and Outdoor Radio Fall Fishing Trip. We'll about 50 people from the Chicagoland area on Lake Mille Lacs. I'm not sure if I'll make it to the FLCS for a breakfast or lunch as my schedule is quite tight and I'll be staying in Winchester (which really isn't that far away from Land O Lakes).
Glad to see this month's Northwoods news from our bud, Mark.
Forest Lake Country Store, Great food and a whole lot more...
Labor Day weekend is this weekend. The weather forecast is for 80 degree temps this weekend. This may be the best weather of the year, and coming on this end of the summer three day weekend. We are already hearing from so many summer visitors that are coming up for the holiday! Knee boards, paddle boards and Jet Ski’s will be used hard this weekend. There will be pizzas on the deck at night, wine and good beer by the fire. Families enjoying a final hiatus to the North Country before school starts, sports kick in and families return to the regular rhythm of fall.
It is enjoyable watching the north woods change from season to season. We have had a cool wet summer but the seepage lakes are enjoying the increasing water depths. Shore birds are happily wading in the new found shallows; frogs are heard at night, harrumphing in the lily pads and weeds. It is interesting to watch the interaction between more water and new growth on each small lake.
The same type of interaction happens in the cabins. We have had a front row seat for seven years. Families bond and grow. Life at the cabin is different than life at home. Parents are removed from the rigors of work and have more time to enjoy with the children again. Children are separated from school peers and bond so well with families. We have seen young children that were just learning to ski turn into young men and ladies; driving, helping around the cabin, coming to the store sharing time together.
New in the Store
The fall beers are arriving every week now. Crème Brouille from Southern Tier, Pumpking, Pumpkick, Leinies Octoberfest, Sprecher Octoberfest, and so many fall beers are here and ready to be shared with friends around a campfire, dining room table or at the end of a nice day in the north woods.
We feel bad on Holiday weekends when people show up for donuts and we are sold out for the day. If you are up for the Holiday weekend and are planning on donuts for one of the mornings you can pre-order your sweets. Stop in the day before you want the donuts, give us a count and we will make them for you the next morning and hold them for you. No need to get here at 7 AM, just hoping for a selection. You can pick them up at your leisure.
(Editor's Note: Being an ex--cop, I can attest to the fact that the FLCS Donuts are worth getting up for. )
We are looking for one or two people to help us staff the store thru the winter months. There is one very unique opportunity to work every Wednesday from 9 AM to about 3 PM. Wednesday is a unique day for us that always require one more set of hands. This is a great opportunity for a stay at home mom that possibly has kids in school. The hours start after the kids are gone and you should be home before they return. This candidate must be at least 18 years old as it requires use of some of our motorized kitchen equipment. Some kitchen experience is preferred but we will train the right person. There is customer contact with taking orders and delivering food to tables. Duties also include prepping/cooking food and cleaning of store at the end of the day.
There are extra hours available on Friday nights and Saturday mornings for the same person or a second person. This position only require to be at least 16 years old.
If you are interested, please stop at the store to discuss the position and fill out an application.

NOTICE A Hearing by Vilas County's Zoning Committee regarding Floodplain Zoning will be held at 9:00 am, Thursday, September 5th, 2013, at the Vilas County Courthouse.
Floodplain Zoning is a first critical step in preserving the Little Tamarack Flowage dam. With Floodplain Zoning, the dam's hazard rating could be changed from "High Hazard" to "Low Hazard", and preserving the dam would be more feasible.
While the Alliance is not expected to testify at this hearing, attendance by members would show support for Floodplain Zoning to the Zoning Committee. Most Alliance Board Members plan to attend. Hope to see you there.

News from the Headwaters Food Pantry
The summer may be ending, but we are still in full swing at the Food Pantry...we served 132 Families in August alone! Remember that hunger has no season.
If you are closing your cabin for the season this weekend, or any weekend, and find any dry or canned goods it would help the Food Pantry if you left them for their use. You can drop off any Non-perishable food contributions at Jensen Aikins Hardware in Conover, Forest Lake Country Store, Headwaters State Bank, The Village Market or the Library in Land O' Lakes.
Desperately needed items include laundry detergent, dish soap, and toilet paper.
The volunteers at the food pantry thank you for your generosity. The food pantry is open the first and third Wednesday of each month from 8:30AM- 11:30AM, stop in to see your community at work! We are located directly behind the Dairy Maid in Land O’ Lakes.
Remember that Cash donations are always appreciated.
A $1 contribution buys 5 pounds of meat through FeedingAmerica.

Since the last newsletter, Kris lost her mother. We want to thank you for the outpouring of support we have received from the entire community. The prayers, kind words, cards and all the other kindness received make the loss easier to bear.
We are also very thankful to our staff that worked so hard to help us through the tough time. The extra hours and effort that they gave us were very much appreciated and allowed us to focus on the healing process.
The north woods are a very unique “family” unit. Not genetically but in a heartfelt, very sincere bonding of caring people. Thanks for all the care, kindness and concern we receive from everyone all year.
