Just last week I had lunch at the Forest Lake Country Store. It was great to have some time to talk with a good friends, Mark and Kris Gostisha. It was fun, as it always is to talk fishing and hear stories about what the locals are doing not only on the water, but also in town. I've been visiting the Land O Lakes area for over 40 years and what's alway a welcoming site is the monthly news from the Northwoods.
Great food and a whole lot more...July 2013
Summer is coming into the north woods with a raincoat. After 6 or 7 years of drought, we are having fairly predictable rain. While much of the rain is at night, daytimes are not immune to the water show. The rain is doing the lakes great service with water levels rising and slowly filling up. Maybe the waterfall pendulum has swung and we can see the lakes restored to more acceptable levels albeit slowly!
Despite the wet weather, business has been strong. People are enjoying the bouts of good weather; fishing, kayaking or hiking and all of the other silent sports that are available in the north woods. It is a pleasure for us to watch the return of the seasonal residents and the onslaught of families that appreciate quality family time at their cabin. Pay close to the newsletter, there are a bunch of fun activities and opportunities for the family this summer.
Stop in and say hello when you come up to Land O’ Lakes.
New in the Store
Check the rack with all of the Salsa’s. We have added quarts of excellent Bread and Butter pickles. We have also added Pickled eggs in two versions. There is a Jalepeno and another with the eggs soaked in Beet juice.
From Valley Popcorn we have added to our popcorn choices with a caramel corn and double coated cheese corn. If you want it Chicago Style, buy a bag of each and mix them up in a large bowl.
The wine racks and beer coolers are overflowing with so many great options and our wine tastings offer a great opportunity to try so many.
Our burgers continue to add new customers to the store. The patties we are using are 100% pure Hereford beef and they have never been frozen. The end result is a great burger with a tone of options to personalize your meal.

She who plants a garden plants happiness.
A flower cannot blossom without sunshine nor a garden without love.
Those who plant trees love others besides themselves.
The love of gardening is a seed which once sown never dies.
A little garden in which to walk, and immensity in which to dream.
If you would be happy all your life, plant a garden.

Author presentation, GOLDEN YEARS MY ASS by Dan Krause
This entertaining, and occasionally irreverent book, examines some of the problems and questions that are part of getting older. The concise and readable chapters discuss topics ranging from identity problems to nursing homes. On the lighter side, the book discusses why individuals should quit rather than retire, and why they should avoid birthday celebrations. It tries to inform, stimulate, and entertain readers, and hopefully accomplishes all three.
The author, Dan Krause, has been a resident of Land O Lakes for 18 years. He was a university professor for more than twenty-five years in Chicago. He has published several books, many articles, and developed programs in gerontology and environmental studies during his career. Dan is an entertaining speaker and will provide you with many laughs.
