News from the Northwoods

Summer is finally here.  Ice has been gone from the Chicago area for a while and now it's gone from the Northwoods of Wisconsin.  With that comes bright green leaves, flowers and great fishing.

I'm about 4 weeks out from heading to the Land O Lakes area for fishing and taping TV shows.  What helps pass the time is reading up on what's going on up north and to help you get in the mood for your summer fishing vacation, let me share with you the Northwoods Newsletter from the Forest Lake Country Store.

Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more,,,
June 2013 News

Summer has officially started in the north woods.  The ice has finally left all the local lakes.  Snow is relegated to remnant piles where the sun seldom shines.  No, not there, we mean on north slopes of hills or shaded areas in the woods.  There is a chorus of spring peepers every night and the birds are singing tunes for the mating rites of spring.  Hummingbirds are regular visitors at feeders hung with care.  It is a glorious rebirth from a long winter season to a start of a new season.

Along with the trees budding out and the birds singing and the other critters doing their spring things, we are ever so happy to see the seasonal visitors that call Land O’ Lakes a summer home! Many are already returning to the north land.  Each day there are hugs and well wishes, tales of the recently departed winter.  Friendships are rekindled and hopes for a glorious summer are shared.

The late start to open water and the ability to drive into cabins has really hampered the local caretakers and professionals that install docks and shore stations or deliver boats.  Black Oak Lake was the last to give up her ice, and that was just this past Tuesday!  We see boats loaded with piers such being hauled around at first light and the workers are still scrambling around late in the day.  No doubt there are many weary bodies at nightfall as they scramble to catch up on spring work.

And we are ready.  We have a long list of summer events, and high hopes for new products.  We want to attack summer with hopes of making all of our customers summer a little better.  13 Wine seminars, 13 beer seminars.  We ran a large ad with the schedule in the Border Bulletin this week, check it on line at www.borderbulletin.com.

If you want, send us a note and we will send you a list of the events via reply email.  A great schedule of wine and beer educational opportunities., from the middle of June ‘til Labor Day!

The fishing report is good in the Land O’ Lakes area.  Walleyes were more than enthusiastic once the ice finally left.  Ten days ago they were very shallow, and now they are in more of a post spawn patter.  The best news is that many anglers are reporting catches of truly jumbo perch mixed in with the walleyes.

New in the Store

The list continues to grow of new and unique things we have found.  If you want something unique to enjoy with your lunch check out the big Pepsi cooler.  We have new Klarbrunn VitaIce sparkling waters in four flavors; Pink Grapefruit, Orange Mango. Black Raspberry, and Acai Blueberry Pomegranite.  Look for giant cans of Brisk Ice Tea, either Raspberry or Original Tea with Lemonade.  We also have the original Coke, made with pure cane sugar in the old retro looking 12 ounce bottles.

We had a supplier several years ago that was selling us some neat crackers, the Chipless Wonder cookies and many other interesting items.  For a while we were not able to purchase these items.  Recently Sysco (our food supplier) purchased the company and we are offering these very unique crackers, cookies, and chips.

We talked about the new kitchen and menu items in the last newsletter.  The burgers we mentioned have been a huge success!  We are using a burger that is 100% Hereford Beef, it is lean and has never been frozen.  We are lightly spicing the burger.  People that have tried them are astounded by the flavor of these burgers.  Try one on your next visit.

The Breakfast changes are equally enjoyed by our customers.  We are now serving an excellent hash brown potato and our Apple wood smoked bacon is out of this world.  Breakfast, lunch or dinner there is something new to tickle your taste buds!

If you are coming up for the Memorial Day holiday, or anytime, and need a bunch of donuts or cinnamon rolls for your gang, give us a heads up the day before you need them.  We will make them early in the morning and set them aside with your name on the box!  You can pick them up at your leisure!

The wine and beer selection continues to grow as we enter the summer season.  There are so many new items it is impossible to list them all.  Stop in and check out our 2013 summer selection, then stop back often as it usually changes nearly every week!

Bat Monitoring:

Teams and individuals have been working with Trees for Tomorrow, doing bat monitoring for four years to determine the level of bats in our area. Bats are more important to our environment than most people realize, and they are threatened by a disease that is marching toward Wisconsin. It is important to get a base-line population survey before the disease arrives.

Anyone who likes to walk in the woods, kayak, or canoe, would find this a great adventure. There are several lakes that are considered high priority, and one is right next door - Forest Lake.

There will be a training session at Trees for Tomorrow in Eagle River on May 30th, and neighboring volunteers really urge a small team to learn more about it.

Please call Troy Walters at 479-6456 x228  And here is a link for more information:
