It's only 18 days away from now when I'll be in the Northwoods of Wisconsin for some ice fishing. But who's counting?
I enjoy hearing from Mark at the Forest Lake Country store when he puts out his monthly newsletter. We too have snow on the ground in Chicago but it's not at all like it is up north. I'm anxious to head north so thanks Mark, you're Northwoods News will make my trip up north seem not so far off. Get the coffee brewing.
Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more,,,
Snow, a great blessing for the north woods. No real snow since New Years and the entire community looks glum. Add a fresh foot of snow and the town is vibrant, bubbly and exciting. Hotels, bars and restaurants are busy serving winter sport enthusiasts. Gas stations, snow plow operators and local stores are all busy tending to their duties. With any luck the snow will continue and the local economy can dig out of the month long rut that was dug by the lack of snow in January!
If you have not seen the bee hive of activity a town can become with snow make a trip up here in the next couple weeks. Cars with ski rack venturing out to their favorite ski hill or cross country ski trail. Sleds are bobbing and weaving thru the woods. At night, their lights piercing, and slashing a tunnel through the darkness. This swift change of atmosphere and activity is reminiscent of the movie White Christmas. Our own hustle and bustle is here, and the entire town is ecstatic!
LuLu B Wines are a new venture in wines. They are using wines from around the world for the most perfect representation for each variety of wine. Here are a couple to consider:
Pinot Grigio; from Delle Venezie Indicazione Geografica Tipica, Italy
Tasting Notes The wine is everything a Pinot Grigio should be: with citrus, delicate tropical fruit and pear, and a crisp, lemony finish and good mineral notes. The acidity and body make it fresh and full in your mouth….perfect for sharing a chilled glass while people watching at an outdoor café!
Food Pairing Perfect when you want a crisper white wine to sip on, or with seafood, salad and pasta.
Pinot Noir; made in Vin de Pays de I’lle de Beauté, France
Tasting Notes This is a rich, fruit forward style of Pinot Noir with hints of dark berries, black cherries and chocolate. A medium bodied wine with a full, silky finish leaving you wanting more.
Food Pairing Enjoy a glass on its own, and when you are enjoying salad, pasta, lightly sauced dishes. Great with seafood too!

February 20th Sprecher Beer Tasting 5:30 PM
We will have Krista Fornear from Sprecher Brewing to try a new adventure in beer tastings. Craft brewers are using many techniques to develop new taste sensations in beers. Many times a great beer is modified slightly to create a totally new brewed product. We will explore some of the beer transitions where one great Sprecher beer is changed to make a totally different brew. One example is the Sprecher Scotch Ale is soaked in Bourbon Barrels and it becomes Czar Brew.
Advance reservations are required and cost if $5 per person. Here is a kicker for this event, every paid attendee will receive $5 off any Sprecher purchase immediately after the event!
February 27th A night of Zinfandel wines 5:30 PM
Nina Martin will be on hand to present a very worldly selection of Zinfandel wines. No, not the white zinfandels you see stacked in the supermarket, but big robust red zinfandel wines from California, Italy and Australia.
Seating is limited to 24 people, and advance reservations are required. Cost is just $8 per person. Call or stop at the store soon to get your reservation!

February 9th and 10th Three Bear Dog Sled Races Land O’ Lakes
This is the biggest winter event in Land O’ Lakes. The large area between the Town Hall and the elementary school is full of teams of dogs and their mushers. The breeds of dogs are as different as the mushers that drive them and the rigs that bring them.
Unlike races like the Iditarod that are endurance races, these races are considered sprint races. Tracks from about 4 miles to 14 miles are prepared thru the summer and fall, and then groomed before the races.
The 3 Bear race has the largest purse in Wisconsin, bringing teams from all over the Midwest and Canada. Over 80 different teams registered for the races last year.
Make it a point to be in Land O’ Lakes for races this winter! Check the website at www.3bear.org for more information!
