Sturgeon fishing is a tradition in Fond du Lac Wisconsin. It's much like deer hunting or the walleye open up here. Sturgeon fishing opened on Saturday, February 9th at 6:30 AM and continues until 12:30 PM during it's short season. With that the Fond du Lac becomes a ghost town. I was heading to the lake at about 8 AM there there were few other cars on the streets.
That wasn't the case on Lake Winnebago. Thousands of vehicles were driving on the lake or parked near a dark house (ice shanty).
It's spearing season for sturgeon and that's all that's talked about up here. I didn't get a permit so I just got to watch. That was fun enough for me.
I was able to capture quit a few photos while taping TV shows for Illinois Outdoors. I was able to enjoy some of Winnebago's fantastic ice fishing too.
On day 1 and 2 of sturgeon spearing I learned a lot about the sport. It's fun, it's exciting and being part of a hundred year old tradition made this trip up north quite special.
