I'm anxious to head for the Northwoods. In just another week I'll be on the road with my daughter Lisa and a couple of her friends for a week of muskie, smallmouth and walleye fishing. We'll do some touring while we're up there, taking in all the colors, checking out one of the cranberry bogs and taking a ride over to the Conserve School for a tour. I've been there before and Lisa is anxious to see it.
Mark from the Forest Lake Country Story sent over his latest newsletter and I'd like to share it with you. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do every month.
Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more,,,
October 2012 News from the Northwoods
The north woods are as beautiful as it gets, any time of the year. Each turn in the road gives you goose bumps. Giant splashes of red, yellow, maroon, gold and russet. You wake up in the morning and the view is spectacular. With any luck it will last another week!
Our shorter winter hours allow us to get out and enjoy at least some of the spectacular fall show! Cool nights and days in the high 60’s and maybe 70’s make for a very enjoyable fall. A walk will put you into a visual vertigo. Which tree is prettier? Which patch of ferns has the best color? Stop a second and your nose picks up the comfortable waft of someone with a wood fire burning, taking the edge off a cool evening.
Fall changes more than the leaves! The whitetail bucks have the summer velvet polished off their antlers. They are getting close to their month of amore. Adult loons are long gone and the seasons young are drifting around the lakes, moaning their lonesome calls, waiting for Mother Nature to call them south. Reports of big muskies are starting to come in with some frequency. The musky are chowing down, and building a layer of fat to make it thru the long winter and early spring spawning.
Recently we were visited by friends from our old home area, Port Washington. Later we were visited by a brother and a nephew. It is one of life’s pleasures to share a meal and memories with old friends and family.
Last we regret the delay is sending the October letter. Our computer needed some attention with more skills than we possess. A week at one of the technology doctors in Eagle River and we are up and running again.

News from the Northwoods
If you ever stopped at the Black Oak bar you will remember Kevin Konnow. He pretty much ran the place for years. Kevin has ventured off to start his own business. Called Brew’s Pub, this is located in the old Rusty Nail building. About the only thing that is the same as the Rusty Nail are the address and the roof. Kevin, and an army of family, friends and contractors, pretty much gutted the place and have turned it into a bright airy sports bar. Lots of light colored woodwork, many big screen TV’s and a friendly staff to greet you and make your stay enjoyable. Stop in and see what Kevin has done to create another fun place to visit in Land O’ Lakes!
