Forest Lake Country Store August News from the Northwoods

Forest Lake Country Store August News from the Northwoods
Grabbing a little breakfast at the Forest Lake Country Store

Just in time.  Olympics are on TV, I just finished breakfast with my wife Judy and daughter Lisa, the dogs have been out and now it is time to head upstairs to the office to go through emails and get some work done for the TV and Radio Shows.

Mark from the Forest Lake Country Store just sent me an email with his August news from the Northwoods.  Great!  I have my cup of coffee, the Olympics are on the TV in the background and now I can enjoy reading about what’s going on up north.

I’m heading back up to the Northwoods in mid October with Lisa.  She’s bringing along a couple friends too.  We’re going to so some fishing and touring.  I want to set up a tour of the Conserve School for Lisa and her friends.  I’ve been there before and it’s really a very nice place to see.  It’s on the shores of Black Oak Lake, just outside of Land O Lakes Wisconsin.  I’ve fished there many times.

Okay time for some Northwoods news….

Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more,,,

August 2012 News

Remember!  After Labor Day we end the extended summer schedule and return to regular hours of 8 AM – 8 PM on Fri and Sat, 8 AM – 2 PM on Sun, Mon, Wed and Thu, closed on Tuesdays.

Summer is in full swing.  The days have been beautiful in the north woods.  Warm/hot days and cool nights.  We have avoided the drought that is plaguing so many areas south of us.  Summer activities are in full swing; fishing, tubing, hiking, bicycling, canoeing and kayaking enthusiasts are enjoying the serenity of the north woods.  All of the year round residents seem to have a steady parade of family coming up to visit.  Family cabins on the lakes have revolving doors with siblings taking their turn to enjoy a week or more at the family retreat.  It seems each year a new generation is started with a youngster having their first trip to the family summer home.  It is exciting to watch families grow, or bring friends to the north woods to share the beauty that surrounds us.

We are flattered to be a small part of the vacation plans and included in the family traditions.  It is enjoyable watching a youngster with their favorite Chocolate Shoppe flavor dripping on their chin, or grandpa and grandma having a sandwich and game of cribbage with their family.  Or a Sprecher root beer float being shared, single glass and twin straws to cement a budding summer romance.

If you have not made your trip, there is still plenty of time to enjoy the north woods serenity before the mad rush of Labor Day weekend.  The lakes are quiet and the bike trails are beautiful.  There is still time and ice cream!

New in the Store

New in the beer cooler are two beers from Left Hand Brewing.  This small Colorado brewer is making some wonderful beers.  We have their Milk Stout and Sawtooth Ale on the shelf right now.

Events in the Store

August 11th Ride with Leinie  - Our second annual event with Wilderness Lakes Trails (WLT).  Dick and Jean Leinenkugel will lead a ceremonial ride on the new section of bicycle trail, return to the store and we will have an all Leinenkugel beer tasting and brat fry.  Tickets are $25 and include the ride, brat fry and one chance for the canoe.  Last year over 150 people enjoyed the afternoon of great beer, brats and camaraderie with other avid bikers.  Check out the WLT web site for more information.

August 11th, 4 PM Sarah Lauer in the Amphitheater, after the Ride with Leinie

Sarah Lauer is a Marquette University student from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She also splits her time in the north woods with her family in Land O’Lakes on Black Oak Lake. Sarah has been playing the guitar and singing since 6th grade and started performing shows after high school. Playing “coffee-house” type music, she covers artists such as Shawn Colvin, Sheryl Crow, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and more. Guitar is her instrument of choice but just recently started playing banjo and the harmonica. Come listen as she plays...

Sarah is playing for tips, and Marquette is not a cheap date. Bring your appetite and grab a chair. And bring a few bucks to put into her guitar case! She is a classy artist anxious to be heard in the north woods. This is a great opportunity to have a meal and unwind after the Ride with Leinie.

News from the Northwoods

Important information for Fans or residents of the Cisco Chain.

Currently the owners of Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) are selling all non-power generating assets from their inventory.  Currently the Cisco Lake dam, that makes the Cisco Chain, is one of the dams on this inventory list.

The Cisco Chain Riparian Owners Association (CCROA) is working to purchase the Cisco Lake dam from Integrys (UPPCO).  The CCROA’s primary goal is to maintain control of the dam and thus retain needed water levels and the integrity of the Cisco Chain.  A secondary goal of dam ownership is to stop any outside interest from purchasing and removing the dam to return the area to a more “natural” state.  Elimination of the dam would mean elimination of the Cisco Chain.  Water levels will drop approximately 5 feet!  This is not an idle threat; outside interests have purchased over 100 dams around the United States and removed them in the last decade!
If you live on the Cisco Chain it is obvious how a 5’ drop in the water would ruin the Chain.  If you are not a property owner, but just enjoy fishing or boating on the Chain, watching eagles or going on a fall color watch, these opportunities would be lost.  A darker side of dam removal is what might happen to otherwise low water tables if the dam is removed.  It is unknown if there will be a negative impact on surrounding lake levels.
The CCROA is working to raise $400,000.  This would give CCROA the money needed to purchase the dam and open an investment account for future maintenance of the dam..  The annual earned interest will produce adequate revenue to cover all annual operating costs.  To date the CCROA has raised over $300,000.  Every dollar is important.  If you are in a position to help, donations can be sent to the CCROA at P O Box 687, Watersmeet, MI 49969.  If you have questions relative to the dam acquisition you can contact Kully Rohlen, CCROA President at 906 358 4460.  There is only one chance to do the right thing.  Please do it soon!

Our season is coming to a close on Thursday, Aug. 9th when we will have our last "SHARE YOUR TALENT DAY" on stage at the Farmer's Market in LOL at 5 p.m. We hope that lots of performers (young, old, and in between) will come to listen and encourage, or to perform. All talents are welcome, whether it is playing, singing, storytelling, a magic act, a comedy act, or poetry reading. It's been a spotty year with the hot and humid weather, and rain off and on. If it's rainy on Aug. 9th, we'll meet at the town pavilion, behind the museum, where there is shelter and a stage. The Krause’s are also looking for someone to take this event over next summer, since they are moving to North Carolina, after being in Land O Lakes since 1995. They have enjoyed sponsoring Open Mic Nite (first 2 yrs.) and Share Your Talent Day (this year) the past three summers, but can no longer do it. Help them find someone to keep it going. Call Mery at 906-544-2554 if you have any suggestions. Dan and Mery would like to take this opportunity to thank all the wonderful local performers who were brave enough to share their talents with the residents and tourists of the area.
