I've recently returned from my trip to the Northwoods. The weather while I was there was a real treat. Mother Nature held nothing back to water the plants. We had a lot of wind and rain. But despite all that, I was able to catch some nice fish. And regardless of the weather, I always have a great time in the Northwoods.
What I've decided to do for this month’s issue of the Forest Lake Country Store news, I'm going to add a brief photo gallery. You'll see photos of some fish that my wife and I caught.
Oh, and while we were up there, we stopped in for lunch at the FLCS.
Forest Lake Country Store - Great food and a whole lot more,,,
The summer has been glorious in the North woods. We wake each morning to a mother robin making the first music in the morning twilight. Loons follow close behind and slowly the Vilas County Avian Choir is filling the chapel of the pines with their beautiful and assorted songs.
Fishing has been good intermittently. If you are up for the holidays fish like it is late July and not like early July. Probably a little deeper than you would normally fish.
This letter is huge with many events so we will not waste your time with our ramblings.
We will digress slightly with a notice about the death of Cecile Otterpohl. Cele was a cornerstone of the community and St. Albert’s Church. She left a trail of happiness everywhere she went and with everyone that spent time with her. We will miss you Cele!
Also, attached is a notice of a unique garden walk in Land O’ Lakes and Phelps area. Check the attachment to see how three great gardeners decorate their own property. This is a unique opportunity to talk one on one with local masters.
Last, the low water levels have made swimmers itch almost chronic on some lakes. We have heard, but not tried, a simple preventive technique. Wipe yourself and the kids down liberally with a good quality, waterproof sunscreen before swimming. This stops the little parasites from leaving their mark on you and the long itchy discomfort. Your dermatologist will also thank you for saving your hide as well!
New in the Store
This is not a new product but a new chance to get a Leinenkugel Canoe. It is hanging on the ceiling of the Country Store. Tickets are $5 each and all proceed go to the Wilderness Lakes Trails (WLT). They are building the trail from Land O’ Lakes, towards the store, then north around the Sylvania, to Watersmeet and back to Land O’ Lakes. WLT completed a section west of the store on Forest Lake Road. About 4 miles of heaven! Check out this trail segment, then consider buying a couple chances to win the canoe, or a donation to their trail building efforts. Look below for more information on the Ride with Leinie event!

News from the Northwoods
From the Land O’ Lakes Historical Society
“Who knows the story of “Johnny Boo”? Who was “Musky Gus”?
These are only a few of the questions being asked by Dr. Barbara Wilkinson as she researches the new exhibit for the Land O’ Lakes NorthernWaters Museum. The exhibit, featuring Guides of the Land O’ Lakes, and greater north woods area, will open to the public Friday, June 28. The NorthernWaters Museum is located just off Hwy B in downtown Land O’ Lakes. Summer hours at the museum will be Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Dr. Wilkinson has been collecting information, interviewing local guides and historians, and gathering artifacts in preparation for the exhibit. Persons having artifacts to be loaned or donated to the exhibit, or those with stories and information they wish to share may contact her at (906) 544-2183, or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org. Exhibit designer is Sandie Pauly.
Docent Training will be Saturday, June 23, 10 a.m. to 11:30. A backup training session for people unable to make that date will be Wednesday, June 27 at 2 p.m. Both sessions are at the NorthernWaters Museum. Interested persons should contact Bonnie Clarke at (715) 547-6287; or (312) 961-8060 (cell); or e-mail email@example.com. Traditionally, docents serve in pairs and usually can sign up for one to two days during the summer, although additional sign-ups are welcome.

From the Headwaters Food Pantry:
Many people ask “How can I help the Food Pantry?”
Since the Headwaters Food Pantry does not purchase non-food items for distribution,
we are always in need of Laundry Soap, Toilet Paper and Paper Towels.
Your generosity never goes unnoticed!!
Contributions can be dropped off at the Land O Lakes Chamber, Jensen Aikins Hardware in Conover, Forest Lake Country Store, Headwaters State Bank, The Village Market and the Library in Land O' Lakes. You can also stop at the Headwaters Food Pantry the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month during 8:30AM-11:30AM to drop off a donation.

Flowage Preservation Alliance NOTICE OF ANNUAL MEETING
The Flowage Preservation Alliance is dedicated to preserving the Tamarack Flowage.
The Annual Meeting of the Flowage Preservation Alliance, Inc. will be held on July 7, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the Conover Town Pavilion, Conover, Wisconsin. Seating may be limited so we suggest that you bring a folding chair. The Meeting is being called -
1 to elect Directors for the coming year
2 to review and approve the Treasurer’s Financial Report
3 to discuss the status of 501(c)(3) application
4 to amend the Bylaws relating to the Election of Directors.
Your Board has become concerned that the By-Law which covers the Election of the Board of Directors (Article VI Sec. 2-3) is not as fair and all-inclusive as it should be, and would be confusing if there were nominations from the floor. Secondly, the proposed By-Law change addresses the continuity of the Board, which the existing By-Law does not. We know this may be confusing; if you have any questions please contact Rich Ruffalo 715-547-6869, George Holloway 715-547-6048, or Clancy Senechalle 708-771-1699.
5 to discuss the status of the Conover Dam Study with Supervisor Karl Jennrich, Chairman of the Town’s Dam Committee
6 to discuss plans and proposals and activities going forward
Submitted by Rich Ruffalo, President
Contact Rich, George or Clancy if you are interested in joining the Flowage Preservation Alliance. Annual membership is only $10.
