I'm counting the days. Mid June I'm heading north and I cannot wait. Reading the Monthly newsletter that comes from the Forest Lake Country Store give me my short fix for the Northwoods. I have to tell you though, there's nothing better than stopping in for a #16, some hot coffee and maybe one of the home made fried cakes to top it off.
Forest Lake Country Store June News
Great food and a whole lot more,,,
Rain. Finally. After extremely high fire warnings, and one near miss with a dangerous fire that ate up 80 acres of Land O’ Lakes and a couple non-inhabited buildings (but no loss of homes or bones) it is nice to have rain! Special thanks to the Land O’ Lakes Fire Department Volunteers as well as several other communities, the County and the DNR. The woods and the lakes will enjoy the bath they have received, let’s hope for more, lot’s more over the next few weeks.
The north wood’s is in full bloom. New growth is evident everywhere you look. This is the time of year that all spruce and balsam trees have a light green tinge against the darker green of the older limbs. In the morning there are a couple mallard drakes that fly between Wood Lake, Merrill Lake and Forest Lake. Two drakes alone sharing their subdued harrumph of contentment tells us that their mates are probably sitting on eggs on a well disguised nest on a shoreline. We look forward to the first spotted fawns, with the wobble knee gait they have early in their life. Just before dark, take a few minutes to just slow down, listen to the birds of the evening or the peepers in the low area just over there. The nighttime silence is always preceded by an orchestrated song on nature!
Fishing has been excellent. If you are up for Memorial Day you need to fish more like it is the first of July. Everything on the lakes is almost a month ahead of a more normal year. Crappie spawn is about over and there’s reports of big bluegills cruising the shoreline looking for love. The smallmouth bass are up on their beds making them an easy target. Largemouth bass will be right behind them.
We look forward to seeing all the families that vacation n Land O’ Lakes over Memorial Day weekend. Check out all of the new items we have added to our shelves. If you have a large group and want to be assured of having fresh donuts in the morning a call to the store the day before helps us make enough morning sweets for everyone. With a call we will make your donuts and set them aside until you pick them up!
Last we have some news on the passing of Vi Becker. Vi was an institution in the north woods. Many remember Vi as the smiling face at the Wonegan Club (now called the Bear Trap Inn). Vi was also the town supervisor in Land O’ Lakes for many years. The first woman to hold a town supervisor position in the entire state of Wisconsin. The town is enriched by her legacy, and the family she has left behind, to carry on her name. Gods speed Vi!
New in the Store
The specialty grain shelves continue to swell with new items. If you want to try a new side dish to impress your family and friends, look at these unique products.
We have worked hard to expand the craft brew category at the Forest Lake Country Store. We continue to stock every available beer from both Sprecher and Leinenkugels. We have beer choices from Sierra Nevada, Sand Creek, Milwaukee Brewing, Lakefront Brewing, New Glarus, Bells, Tyranena, New Belgium and more. Now we have added choices from Lagunitas, Founders, Ommegang, Southern Tier and more.
Forest Lake Country Store garments are here! We have new colors in the popular track jacket and fleece lined hoodies. We also have a new one size fits most night shirt with a dramatic look on the front. Check out the Wine Shirts. Black shirts with half sleeves and rhinestone studded logos for your favorite past time, enjoying wine!
This week we are introducing a program on specialty meats. These are restaurant quality meats, cut, trimmed and packed individually. Each piece is individually cryovak packed. Any bone-in meats have a special bone guard wrapped around the meat that prevents bones from breaking the sealed package. There is a minimum of fat on the meats, making your price per pound great. Just open the package and cook! All meats will be market priced every Monday morning and orders need to be placed by Tuesday noon. Meats will arrive in the store Thursday afternoon. Most cuts of meat are packed in 10# cases. We have this week’s price list attached to the newsletter. If you are interested in any item let us know with a return email by noon Tuesday.
