Fall Mushrooms are Here at Last

Sheepshead mushrooms (also known as Hen of the Woods) are popping up from the forest floor. This rainy weather, followed by a few days of sun is sure to get them going. They can be found at the bases of large oak trees (I mean trees that you cannot wrap your arms around!) They are a grayish-brown fungus that grow from the ground, not on the tree. We find most of ours on the north side of the tree, but be sure to look all around the entire base of the tree.

Sheepheads are excellent to eat (battered and deep fried) served with some ranch dressing or catchup. They are also one of the easiest mushrooms to find. Simply locate a patch of timber with lots of big oak trees. Just make sure you have permission to access to property.

Good luck!
